On sloping ground Christ goes to the right with bent knees, on the left shoulder carrying the cross, the trunk of which is held up with both arms by Simon of Cyrene. Veronica kneels opposite him, holding the cloth in her right hand, which Christ gives her back. Behind Veronica a soldier's armor with another part of a cord in his right hand, and a man, grimacing with both hands in his mouth, sticking out his tongue. On the far left a woman with a child on her arm, a spectator placed frontally, an executioner holding Christ by the hair and raising his right fist, and a man in a cap blowing a shawm. Under the sweatcloth, a barking mangy dog runs to the right. Christ in long robes wears a cord around the waist with a block of nails at the hanging end. Veronica with braid has a turban over a cap, a cloth of which runs under the chin .; also puff sleeves, pleated skirt and coat. The armored soldier wears a helmet with a folded visor and a belt over the shoulders; the other a leather helmet, knitted undergarment, over which a two-part skirt, the front panel of which is suspended with fringe between the belt around his waist, and high boots; the third, behind Christ, a breastplate over chain mail and a cap. Simon of Cyrene wears a turban over a Jew's hat, a jacket with puff sleeves, a skirt open to the side and a dagger (?) On a belt; the herald's high cap, overcoat with turned-up sleeves; the spectator a hat, a kind of cape and a slanting belt with bells (?); the woman with child a braid, turban and child cloth like Veronica, shoulder collar and cloak, the front and back of which are held together by an agrafe.

Usage in poetry
The flowery glens and shady slopes
Are hateful to his eyes;
Beyond the heights, beyond the storms,
The land of promise lies.
I found it on a mountain slope,
The sunlight on its face;
It caught from clouds a smile of hope
That brightened all the place.
The snows crept down the mountain,
The flowers crept up the slope,
Till they seemed to meet and mingle,
Like human fear and hope.
Fringed with gold their mantles flow
On the slopes of westering knolls;
In the wind they whisper low
Of the Sunset Land of Souls.
But lo! a tall and stately youth
Ascends the grassy slope;
His bright dark eyes are glancing round,
His heart beats high with hope.
So now when up the year's bright slope
A call comes ringing o'er and o'er,
I fling the portal wide, in hope
'Tis April at the door.
