Liverpool 4-1 Luton Town: Díaz And Mac Allister Vital For Reds

Liverpool have extended their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table to four points, thanks to a home victory against Luton Town on Wednesday night.

The Anfield side had to come from a goal behind to defeat lowly Luton, on a night where title rivals Arsenal were away on Champions League duty and suffered a 1-0 defeat in Porto.

Manchester City had defeated Brentford 1-0 in the league on Tuesday night but Liverpool made absolutely no mistake in restoring a nice gap at the summit just 24 hours later, now they will turn their attention to the League Cup Final with Chelsea.

Colombian winger Luis Díaz had 58 touches in the game, won eight ground duels from a possible 15 and managed 10 shots; three on target, three off target and four blocked attempts. In other words he was absolutely everywhere, much like in the League Cup Final against Chelsea two years ago, during his impressive early days with the club.

Despite Díaz causing mischief for Luton Town all night, if had he been more clinical Liverpool would have been winning this game very early on, and Jurgen Klopp would have avoided a significant hour of stress.

Díaz racked up an impressive xG of 1.76 and finally found the net to make it 3-1 to Liverpool to seal the victory, a strike that he made look easy in the end, and one that his efforts on the night deserved.

Alexis Mac Allister was key in midfield for Liverpool. The Argentine broke up play well and set up countless attacks for the front three. The number 10 provided back-to-back assists in two crazy minutes at Anfield that saw the stadium rocking. Liverpool turned on the style and regained the lead from Luton, making 0-1 become 2-1 in the blink of an eye.

Mac Allister fired in two crosses from the right-hand side in quick succession, each were met by first-time finishes from the heads of Virgil Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo respectively. Harvey Elliott would cap the night off with a late fourth for Liverpool.

Another win for the league leaders was completed with a smattering of South American influence; a common theme at Anfield this season. Luis Díaz and Alexis Mac Allister were substituted off on the 88-minute mark and they were met by a rousing reception from the home supporters.

Liverpool will now look forward to their cup final date with Chelsea this Sunday, whilst title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City will be back in Premier League action. The Gunners host Newcastle, whilst City visit Bournemouth, as both teams look to close the gap on Liverpool in what has become a thrilling three-horse title race.
