Understanding Surgical Procedures : Hemicolectomy – Hemicolectomy involves surgical removal of a partof the colon (large intestine). Depending on the part of the colon that is removed, the operation is named as right hemicolectomy (removal terminal 10 cm of small intestine, caecum, ascending colon and part of transverse colon), left hemicolectomy (removal of part of transverse colon, descending colon), sigmoid colectomy and transverse colectomy.
This operation is performed for a number of conditions such as colon cancer and non-cancerous conditions i.e. Crohn’s disease
complicated diverticular disease.
The modern surgery for colon cancer involves “central (at the origin) ligation” of arteries supplying the colonic segment to completely remove the draining lymph nodes as part of surgical specimen.
Hemicolectomy can be performed by open, laparoscopic or robotic techniques.

Hemicolectomy Surgical Procedures
Hemicolectomy is generally considered a safe surgical procedure. However, like any surgical procedure, it does carry some risks, including anastomotic leaks, wound infection and bleeding. At Max Super speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi we have analyzed our outcomes of colorectal surgery. We have evaluated surgical outcomes on validated international quality benchmarks / scoring systems – American College of Surgeons NSQIP risk calculator and Colo Rectal POSSUM score (England). Our outcomes are comparable to best of International standards. We are happy to share that cost of colorectal surgery at our center is only a fraction of that incurred at well-endowed western medical centers.
