When Warren High's star quarterback is injured during the season opener, Kevin Taylor takes over the position. There's only one Kevin has been used to watching the plays from the sidelines, not leading them from the line of scrimmage. Page-turning sports action and compelling personal drama make this another winner from popular sports novelist Thomas Dygard. Young Adults' Choices for 2000 (IRA)

In His Own Words...

"I can't remember when I first started writing fiction. it was shortly after I began reading fiction, I'm sure.

"I've been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember. As a teenager, I read a lot of the same kinds of books I'm writing-the John R. Tunis sports stories, for example. I also read a lot of history when I was young-and I still do now. It's always fascinated me.

"When I was a high school senior, I was offered two jobs, both of the apprentice sort. One was in a commercial artist's studio, on a recommendation from my art teacher. The other was in the sports department of the local newspaper, following work on the school paper. I took the sportswriting job.

"For four years I worked for the Arkansas Gazette while attending the University of Arkansas, first at Little Rock and then at Fayetteville, covering football, baseball, basketball, boxing, golf, tennis-everything that made up the sports page. After graduation, I joined the Associated Press as a newsman at Little Rock and later worked in AP bureaus in Detroit, Birmingham, and New Orleans. Eventually, I was Chief of Bureau in Little Rock, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Tokyo, Japan. I retired from the Associated Press in 1993 and now live in Evansville, Indiana.

"For me, writing fiction is fun, relaxing, and satisfying-an enjoyable change of pace, a recharging of the batteries.

"My first young adult novel, Running Scared, got started one night in a motel room in Champaign, Illinois, when I had nothing else to do. Before long, the story had me in its grip. The creation of the thing was a fascinating experience. I liked the characters. I liked leading them through their problems to their triumphs. I kept going until one day it was finished.

"I did not set out to write for young people. Looking back, I think it was something of a blessing that 1 did not. As I wrote Running Scared, I imagined the reader as an adult, but after it was finished, it seemed more appropriate for young readers. The result, I think, was that the story did not talk down to teenagers. In every book I've written since, I've tried to keep the same approach."

I really liked the book all around because it goes from a star quarterback being the best (he gets hurt with a knee injury), to a second string quarterback winning a championship. My favorite character would be Kevin Taylor (main character and the second stringer) because he goes from being basically a nobody, because Rob was the star quarterback, to being an amazing quarterback that won a championship. I didn't really like Rob at the start because he seemed like he acted as if he was too good for anybody, but that changed because Kevin got ro see who he really was. A kid who didn't really have any close friends, he worked all the time on his quarterback skills, and just kind of being a loner that worked very hard. Rob only really had just his dad (Pop). Another character that I didn't really like was Mike (The star wide receiver) he really was rude to Kevin the whole time because he was not used to Kevin's quarterback abilities. Mike tried to take Kevin's spot because he didn't like how Kevin played and he was inexperienced. I really liked one part at the end where Kevin finally got his approval after winning the championship game. Another favorite part I liked was when Rob wanted Kevin to practice with him because Rob finally started to be a little social and he was a good coach to Kevin, and that's how Kevin got to be a really good quarterback. I really liked that Kevin's best friend Shawn, had helped him get through tough situations(all the games and characters being rude) and stuck by his side no matter what.

Second Stringer is about a second string quarterback that finally gets his big chance when the first string quarterback brakes his leg and isn't able to play for the rest of the season. There are a couple problems though, the second string quarterback (Kevin Taylor) isn't use to leading the offense, he is use to standing back and watching the game on the side lines. Another thing is that the players aren't use to Kevin’s passes and hand-offs, so there are a lot of bad plays. I really enjoyed this book. I liked how things were always going bad but they always found a way to pick themselves up and make things better. Another thing I really like is how it’s a good example of teamwork, because at first Kevin’s teammates have no faith in him and his abilities but in the end the all work together and do great. I would recommend this book to anyone who plays football or just loves a great sports novel.

The book I read for this month was Second Stringer. This book is by Thomas J. Dygard. It is Realistic Fiction because this book could actually take place in current time. The main character of the book is Kevin Taylor. He is very strong, not only physically but mentally. He never gives up hope and faith for his team and himself.I would rate this book a 5. It was probably one of the best books I have ever read. It has so much action and never stops with the plot. Kevin Taylor is the back up quarterback for the Warren High football team. He finally gets his chance because he star quarterback gets hurt. Can Kevin Taylor take his place or does the whole team fall apart?

I read Second Stringer, the main character is Kevin Taylor. He is the second best quarterback on the team. Rob Montgomery is the best quarterback, but gets injured making, Kevin step up to the plate. I really like the book. It shows how you can be number 2 in a situation, then to number 1 in the next minute. The main character make some terrible plays, but he pulled through and won the championship for the team. None of the teammates supported him, but that didn't stop him from trying his hardest to prove he was good to the whole school. Overall, this book was a good read and interesting to see how it played out.

This book is about how a star qb gets hurt and the second string qb has to fill in for him. He feels really scared because he hasn't played that position in a while. His coach says he was doing good but the star qb Is still be picking about every single move he makes. I didn't finish the book do so I can't tell the rest.

Second Stringer is an encouraging book about a boy named Kevin who is the back up quarterback for his football team and the starting quarterback is out for season because he eared something. He is so nervous because everyone is doubting him and he does not have enough confidence. Will he have enough confidence for the rest of the season?

I thought that this book was god for any football fan, because it shows that even though he was a backup quarterback, he could still get the job done when his team needed it. He ended up leading his team to a championship despite missing the great Rob Montgomery. It was a great senior season for him.

I'm giving this one the benefit of the doubt by giving it 4 stars. I'm not the intended audience after all.

Good conflict though. Solid characters. Knowing football would be a plus but even as ignorant as I am, I still found the games thrilling. If you're looking for something to get teen boys to read this is a good choice.

Second Stringer captivates the audience with a thrilling story about how a nobody can become the talk of the town. Thomas J. Dygard is the author, and he published this book in 1998. It is a standalone book in a line of sports books Dygard has written.
Even though the book is short at only 192 pages, Dygard makes it feel very alive. All the characters seem real and there is nothing extremely outlandish that makes it feel like fiction. Every single person seems like someone that you would see just walking down the street. Another thing Dygard does extremely well is bringing the game atmosphere into the pages. The games feel intense and captivating as if you are actually attending the game. While in some stories you feel like there is never a chance the protagonist will lose, this book is the opposite. You feel as if the protagonist has zero chance of winning, and you are gripped to your book trying to figure out what will happen on the next page. The only thing I dislike is how short the book is. It felt extremely quick to complete and did not have a very satisfying ending.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the sport of football. It has a very good feel for that target audience, but I do not think anyone else would like it as it is all about football.

SECOND STRINGER Second Stringer By Thomas J. Dygard is about a kid named.Kevin wanted to be starting qb. rob the starting qb got hurt so it was kevin's time to shine. he has a big reputation to live up too.He has practiced harder then ever before and made a lot of mistakes that his coach and teammates yell at him for. but rob helps him.And kevin finds out the rob is not so popular when he is not starting.Kevin gets better and leads his team to many wins.

Before kevin's first start rob calls him and wishes him good luck rob and kevin have really never talked before this and kevin was very surprised and he took some advice from him and it helped ¨it does not matter how you start it matters how you finish¨.and that was like there motto threw out the whole book and kevin the main character is really good at finishing the game.

I feel this book is medium like its not that hard to read but no that interesting i like sports and all but this book is not that good over all i feel if you want something easy to read and about sports this is your book. This book in kinda unreal like he is good at football but throws like 400 yards in one game but he is in highschool so its not really believable.

Kevin Taylor has always been the backup quarterback, a distant second to star quarterback Rob Montgomery. When Rob is seriously injured in the first game of their senior year, Kevin finds himself thrust into the top spot. Lacking the confidence to lead the team, Kevin wonders just how long he'll be allowed to struggle before he misses this one opportunity to be a starter for the team he loves.

This novel is written in a very accessible way for teens. Capturing the uncertainty that plagues the young football player perfectly, Dygard maps out a complex relationship between teammates that rings true. There is a definite growth of the key characters as they navigate uncharted waters, dealing with a changing team dynamic that no one anticipated. Though it's geared around the teenage demographic, there's also a strong adult presence in the character of the coach and a few parents. Second Stringer shows the fine line between teamwork and competition, particularly as the players begin to learn more about each other and about themselves. This novel will please both football fans and those looking for a good coming of age story.

My book is called Second Stringer by Thomas j. Dygard. It is a 900Lexile value. This story is about a kid named kevin that plays football. But he is a second stringer QB so he only plays when the starting QB gets hurt. That is the exact thing that happened the star QB got hurt and so then he started. He wasn't very good but he still practised hard.
Never give up keep trying. Just because you are the second string doesn't mean they don't need you. If you love this is a story about sport and you don't play that much you can work to get better and push your way to the starting position you never know what if your star QB get injured and then they need you to win the game you didn't practise and you lose the game. That is why i think this is a good theme for my book
I liked this book. I recommend it if you like football then you would like this. I liked this book because it was a game that made the second stringer the QB. so the second stringer got the chance to show them what he's got. But he really isn't that good so the old. Thank you for reading i hope you read the book to.

The name of my book is Second Stringer, the authors name is Thomas J. Dygard. The lexile level is 900L. The book is about a second string football player that is a quarterback and the first stringer gets injured and he has to step up and be the first stringer when he was just used to watching not playing.
The theme in my book is that Kevin the second stringer is not that good of a quarterback or at least everyone thinks. Kevin works his butt of to become the best and get really good. At the end he is a really good player and does really good.
I think this book is really good, its not too confusing or too hard. The book wasnt that predictable and I think people that like football or just sports and comebacks then this would be a good book for them. I really liked this book and I think a lot of others would too.

I thought Second Stringer was amazing. I like sports books. This book's plot just kept me reading and on the edge of my seat. Will Kevin Taylor lead his team to the Championship? Or will he only be remembered as a fill-in back up? Itv was just so cool to read.

Very good football book, it shows that you can be anything from what you came from. Kevin Taylor the main character of the book, came from being a bench player to a very good player on the team. There were a lot of twists and I wish the story never ended.

The book that i'm going to wright about is "Second Stringer" and it is by "Thomas J. Dygard".I'm going to wright some stuff in the next paragraph because this one is just for telling what the book is about. The main character is Kevin and his player on his team is Zach. This book is good for people that like football because that is what it talks about. The place is on a football field.

In the first part of the book it talks how they are playing a game and how they play and how they won they won by 12 in there first game. In the next part of the book they are ready to play another game and this is when the quarterback gets hurt and they back up one has to come and play because they have to have one to play if they did not have a backup one they would have to quit and they do not want to do that because they are winning this game. In the next part of the book they are going to the championship game and the game is against a really hard team and the backup quarterback is doing good until he throws a pick to the other team and they run it back for a touchdown and now they are down by 7 and then they tie up the game and at the 4 quarter it is tied and Zachs team wins by a touchdown.

If you want to read a really good book you have to read this book that i’m writing about because this book is really good.If you want to read this book you have to read to book review first to see if you like this book if you don’t like this book you will not like anyone of his books because they are like all the same.Butt there is some other books that you might like there sports but you will like them.

Second Stringer by Thomas J. Dygard, talks about a kid named Kevin Taylor. He was always the second best at what he does and was okay with it at first. Warren High is always historical in high school football and they have a star Quarterback named Rob Montgomery. Late in the first game he hurt his knee, forcing Kevin to take over. Dygard, uses this situation to show friendship and no matter how tough the situation you can only practice and improve.
The very first game when Kevin was the first string QB, Dygard portrays him very nervous and not confident at all. Showing these emotions can destroy a team’s confidence and morale. Kevin had many doubters on the team already including the cocky, Mike Thurman. Mike Thurman was the target receiver and when he does not get the ball he is not happy. Fortunately, Kevin threw Mike a touchdown boosting Kevin’s and the team’s confidence. Kevin also does not take advice from the injured star quarter back, Rob. Rob tells Kevin to do a couple of fakes. For example, pump fakes, always moving your eyes, and finesse moves to avoid tacklers. Regrettably, Kevin did not listen and though he did not need anyone else’s help. It turns out Kevin needed all the tips Rob gave him because the next drive down, Kevin threw an interception.
Later on in the season Kevin starts having confidence in himself and becomes a leader of the team. Kevin starts to listen to Rob and goes over to his house twice or three times a week to work on his footwork, passing, and pump fakes. Kevin understood that he needed to practice to take this team to state. Dygard really shows the theme during the middle of the book to show who Kevin Taylor really is and how practice really makes a difference.
Beginning of the end of Second Stringer. The reader finds out the Rob is off crutches and is ready to play. The Coaches rule for Warren High football is, “If you get hurt and you are the first string you get your spot back when you are healthy no matter what.” (Dygard 137). Fortunately for Kevin, Rob is not 100% and Kevin is still the starter. The game following this incident, Kevin played the best football he has ever played. He even scored the game winning touchdown!
At the end of the book, Kevin is still starting over Rob despite the coach’s rule. Rob is very upset but gets over it by putting the team first and being happy for Kevin. Dygard, uses the power of friendship to overcome selflessness. Warren is playing in the state football game, with Kevin as the starting QB. At the beginning Kevin was only a second string now he could possibly win state as a starting QB. Luckily they do win state because of Kevin’s tenacious and determination attitude.
I highly recommend this book because it gives great examples of friendship, dedication, and shows the reader that anything is possible.

Book Review
The book that I chose to do the Book Review was Second Stringer, and the author is Thomas J. Dygard. The book was about a boy named Kevin and he is the second stringer for the Lions football team. But when the first stringer gets hurt Kevin has to step it up a notch and work hard to become that first stringer that the Lions need. The lexile level for the book Second Stringer is 900. And their is 174 pages in the book
The setting of the book the Second Stringer is October 1999, most of the book is at a football game. The story has a lot of drama in it because like when the first stringer got hurt everybody is making such a big deal about how bad their gonna such with the second stringer. And when Mike wanted to be the quarterback because he was one with the youth so he wanted to replace Kevin. And the whole team was with Mike but the coach thought it was a terrible idea and yelled at the team for wanting to replace Kevin. The life lesson that the book Second Stringer demonstrates is that always believe in yourself because you can do anything when you push yourself to become better.
I recommend this book so much it was just a blast to read every time I started to read I never wanted to stop because I would just get into it so quick. It teaches you a lot about football and that hard work always pays off in the end. The only thing that I didn’t like about the book is that most of the book is in a game and their should be something else than just in a game. The book was easy for me to read their was only a couple words that I startled on but other than that I could read every word. My favorite part was when Kevin was at Robs house and they were training to make Kevin beter that was a good part

The book I read was Second Stringer. The author is Thomas J. Dygard. This book taught me to work hard, because anything could happen in the world of sports. I liked this book a lot, and it was fun to read. It taught me to work harder, and be the best I can be. This book really shows readers that hard work pays off. It also shows that even though you and someone else are rivals on the field, court, or whatever your playing on, you can still be friends and help each other out. This was like when Rob helped Kevin out when Rob got injured.
I’m a big sports person, and I like reading so combining the two in such a good way like Thomas J. Dygard did it really got me hooked on the book. I’ve read sports books in the past, but this one has been my favorite. It really brings you into the life of Kevin Taylor, and shows you how he feels, acts, thinks, etc. I think Thomas J. Dygard did a really nice job with this book and showed young readers to work hard. Thomas J. Dygard does a very nice job describing Kevin’s actions, and feelings on the football field. He does a good job describing the situations on and off the field so that you really know what’s going on. Thomas Dygard does an excellent job giving you a visual picture of what’s going on and that really helps you understand it.
I recommend Second Stringer to young athletes that haven’t quite developed their skills yet. I think every kid, athlete or not, would like this book though. If you don’t understand football, this might be hard to understand at some points. This is a very good book that I enjoyed, and want people to read.

Second Stringer
The book i'm reviewing is Second Stringer: The lexile Level of The Second Stringer is 900. This book is a fiction story it is about a Second String quarterback who’s dream is to play as the first string but when the first string quarterback got hurt he got the starting spot as a quarterback. But he wasn’t doing to good so all the players hated him. Until his Friend Rob started helping him work on his footwork and throwing so he would get better.
When the starting quarterback got hurt the author changed the way the book is read. The starting quarterback got hurt by getting bumped into his teammates and then he got through to the ground by the defense of players and he could not get to his feet because his leg got hurt. Now he wrote sad and mad because all the players were mad and sad because their quarterback was there star player. The team knew that they couldn’t win with the second string quarterback in. The theme also changed because when the First string got hurt the second string never gave up and kept on playing and kept on winning. So the theme was to never give up on your dreams Because the second string always wanted to win games as a starting quarterback.
I recommend this book because Kevin the main character never gave up on his dream to be the starting quarterback for his football team. This is 3rd person point of view and is a very good book if you like football. If you also like friendship Kevin and the starting quarterback that got hurt where true friends at the end of the book. Thomas J. Dygard made the book flow really good to.

My book was placed in a small town like south charleston. It's a little school called warren high school. They were the tigers. In this town everything's the same everyday and everyone talks and spreads rumors. But one thing everyone knows about is the amazing star quarterback ,Rob Montgomery. He is the all star qb of this little town. He is the man that is going to take this team to the championship. But then he gets hurt. Everyone thinks the season's over. They are stuck with the second string qb our main character Kevin Taylor.
Kevin has never really has his shot yet. He went in when they were already blowing another team out and he played on special teams but he never thought he’d be running the team for the rest of the season. No one had any faith in him. No one thought that they would even make the playoffs without their all star qb. Kevin didn't have the vision nor the arm that Rob. The season wasn't looking to good so far.
Kenvin was nervous and not very confident in himself. He didn't know how the season was going to go or how He was going to do. And no one had confidence in him either besides his best friend shawn foster was really the only person who thought he could get the job done. He always told kevin he wasn't as bad as he thought he. And he was right.
