Texas has unveiled a new design for drivers licenses, IDs and license to carry cards.

On Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, the Texas Department of Public Safety started releasing newly designed identification cards with new security upgrades, according to a news release.

The affected cards include driver's licenses, identification cards and License to Carry cards. While the change began this week, people who have an active card do not need to rush to change it. The expiration dates for the cards are still valid, according to the DPS.

The Texas Department of Public Safety began issuing these newly designed license to carry cards on Feb. 24, 2020.

What has changed?

The material is now made from polycarbonate material, which is harder to replicate and tamper with. Laser engraving also adds another layer of protection against forgeries and changes, according to the release.

People who have a health condition that may hamper their communication abilities will have an identifier on their cards. Veterans, including disabled veterans, will also have an identifier with their branch of service on the front, according to the release.

Driver's licenses and IDs will have a gold star in the upper right corner, marking them as REAL ID compliant. Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, people will need a valid passport, military ID or REAL ID compliant driver's license with the star to travel on commercial airlines or enter federal facilities, according to the release.

Driver's licenses and IDs issued since October 2016 are REAL ID compliant.

If your card does not have the gold star, visit Texas.gov to check their eligibility for early renewal or request a compliant card.

These upgrades meet the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators national standards, according to the release. Further information about the cards can be found at dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense.
