What: Fuschia “Dying Embers” is a hummingbird paradise. This hardy fuschia has smaller flowers with dark red, lacquered sepals and a rich aubergine (eggplant-colored) corolla. The perennial grows to be 1½ to 2 feet tall, and about the same in width during the growing season, with colorful flowering beginning in early summer until frost before going dormant for the winter.
Where: Hardy fuchsias grow best and will flower more in full sun, although light or open shade is OK. The soil should be rich and well-drained.
Size: This fuschia will grow to be 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide when mature.
Care: Water regularly during dry periods; frequent watering is required for plants in more sun. In the spring, watch for the new leaves to emerge and cut back any deadwood. If the winter was particularly cold, this may mean cutting the branches from the previous year to the ground, taking care not to break any new shoots that are emerging from the base.
