In the eleventh century Lady Godiva, the wife of Leofrick, Earl of Mercia is said to have ridden a horse while in the nude through the town of Coventry. She did this to protest the treatment of the poor. Her husband, The Earl, told her if she did he would revoke the high tolls inflicted upon the people. She did. He did. The current statue, pictured, was created by Sir William Dick and unveiled on 22 October 1949. The City council of Coventry has assured me that there is no copyright protection against it and that I may use my pictures as I wish including the resale of them. A copy of their statement has been forwarded to Istock under separate cover.
