When Awkward premiered in July 2011, it was all MTV viewers could talk about! The show, which starred Ashley Rickards, Beau Mirchoff, Jillian Rose Reed, Brett Davern, Molly Tarlov and Greer Grammer, followed the story of unpopular high schooler Jenna Hamilton who started a blog to share her experiences as a teenager. When her site blows up, Jenna becomes one of the more well-known students at her school. After five seasons, Awkward came to an end in May 2016.
Throughout the years they filmed together, the entire cast was super close. Beau — otherwise known as Matty McKibben — referred to the show’s set as “summer camp” while chatting with Just Jared Jr. in 2013.
“It’s completely like summer camp,” Molly — who played Sadie — added at the time. “Everything Awkward is like the end all, be all. You’re eating breakfast with the same people every morning at 5:30 am. You’re eating the same breakfast.”
Beau added, “We’re all so close. We see each other sporadically. We all see each other … well, not as much as I’d like.”
Following the show’s series finale, The Fosters alum also gushed to Teen Vogue about how the series finale was “left a little open-ended,” possibly for more to come.
“There’s definitely a definitive comment made [in the finale], but with regard to a few relationships and storylines, there’s definitely room to expand. So it can kind of go either way,” the actor shared at the time. “It’s been a wonderful five years, and I’m sad to see it go. Hopefully, if the fans are vocal enough, they’ll continue [the show]. But either way, it’s been a wonderful experience and I’m very grateful to be a part of it.”
While the cast has since moved on to other projects — Beau, for one, stars as Jamie on Freeform’s Good Trouble — they’re still close. In fact, there was a major Awkward reunion at Jillian’s wedding to longtime love Marty Shannon in October 2021.
“My lil baby is married!!!!!!! A little storm can’t stop us from celebrating!” Molly shared on Instagram alongside photos from the wedding. Greer also shared a social media post with snaps from the ceremony, writing, “THE ONE WHERE JILLIAN GETS MARRIED!!! Not wind, rain or hail could stop this crew from celebrating.”
