Abstract Sunset Impasto Painting

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Liquitex Basics Acrylic colors:
• Titanium White
• Cadmium Orange Hue
• Primary Red
• Phthalocyanine Blue
• Liquitex Gloss Super Heavy Gel Medium
• 9"x 12" Canvas (pre-primed)
• Palette Knife (with rounded tip)
• Palette paper
• Gloves (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Protect your work surface with paper or plastic (recommended) and assemble supplies & tools.
2. Scoop out Gloss Super Heavy Gel into 6 separate piles on the palette paper with the following quantities:
• Gel Pile 1: 3 Tablespoons
• Gel Pile 2: 3 Tablespoons
• Gel Pile 3: 3 Tablespoons
• Gel Pile 4: 3 Tablespoons
• Gel Pile 5: 3 Tablespoons
• Gel Pile 6: 3 Tablespoons
3. Now add paint colors to above Gel Medium Piles per below and MIX:
• Add to Gel Pile 1: 1 Tablespoon Titanium White, 1/3 teaspoon Cadmium Orange Hue = LIGHT PEACH MIX
• Add to Gel Pile 2: 1 3/4 teaspoons Cadmium Orange Hue = ORANGE MIX
• Add to Gel Pile 3: 1 3/4 teaspoons Primary Red = RED MIX
• Add to Gel Pile 4: 1 3/4 teaspoons Primary Red, 1 Pea-Sized Dot Phthalo Blue = DARK PURPLE MIX
• Add to Gel Pile 5: 1 3/4 teaspoons DARK PURPLE MIX, 3 1/2 teaspoons Titanium White = MED PURPLE
• Add to Gel Pile 6: 1 3/4 teaspoons DARK PURPLE MIX, 1 1/2 teaspoons Titanium White = LIGHT PURPLE
4. Take the LIGHT PEACH MIX and use the palette knife to dab thick dot strokes in the upper left corner of the canvas. Allow the dots to have some space between, and then fill in with additional dots.
5. Clean off the palette knife and dab thick dot strokes of the ORANGE MIX underneath the LIGHT PEACH in a subtle arch shape.
6. Clean off the palette knife and dab thick dot strokes of the RED MIX underneath the ORANGE following the arch shape.
7. Using the same technique, create the same arch with the LIGHT PURPLE MIX underneath the RED.
8. Next arch uses the MEDIUM PURPLE MIX underneath the LIGHT PURPLE.
9. Fill out the rest of the canvas with the RED MIX.
10. Next step is to visually blend the color arches together.
11. Using the ORANGE MIX, dab some spaced out dot strokes into the LIGHT PEACH arch.
12. Next, use the RED MIX, and dab some spaced out dot strokes into the ORANGE arch.
13. Lastly, use the LIGHT PURPLE MIX, and dab some spaced out dot strokes into the RED on the bottom corner of the canvas.
14. Allow to dry. Will be dry to the touch in several hours and dry enough to ship in about 3 days.

JOANN HACKS:

• Don't forget to clean the palette knife off in between adding new colors to the canvas.
