Hydnoid Fungus - Family Hydnaceae, Sarcodontia pachyodon

Hymenium consisted of slender, downward-hanging, cream-yellow spines. They did not have caps.

  1. Amazing shot! Interesting white on the tips.
    I'm just guessing but Hydnaceae sensu lato looks visually similar and matches distribution:

    1. Thanks for the links. It does look similar to those pictured and is definitely in that family. One cool thing about hydnoid fungi is that, a lot of the time, if you brush your hand against the spines, they will bruise. I tried it with the ones pictured, but they didn't bruise.   2. Hi Christine.. you might also consider Spongipellis pachyodon - northern hemisphere species which may develop 'shelves' and might not. :) Should be in your part of the world. Posted 6 years ago
