Location: Pepinster, Verviers, Liège, Wallonie, Wallonia, Belgium
Pepinster traditionally owned many water mills due to its location on two fast-flowing rivers. In the 18th century, four water mills were made suitable for the textile industry, which flourished in the area around Verviers. One of the largest was Lieutenant & Peltzer's cloth factory in the 19th century. In 1921 this came into the hands of the brothers Jules (II) and Georges Regout, sons of the Maastricht wool manufacturer Jules I Regout. Both sons were married to sisters Adrienne and Jeanne Lieutenant, daughters of factory owner Alfred Lieutenant. Under the name Textile de Pepinster, the company experienced a new heyday in the 20th century. In 1962 the company was taken over by a German investor, but it went bankrupt in 1975. The factory closed in 1976, with about 300 employees losing their jobs. Some of the buildings were demolished in 2012, but the Art Deco façade along the Vesdre is a protected industrial monument.
