Rosewood (‘Aniba rosaeodora’) also known as pau rosa, is an essential oil-bearing plant categorized on the IUCN Red List as Endangered, and it is CITES-protected. There are many reasons this plant is facing extinction including unsustainable harvesting of mature trees with little to no signs of regeneration. Rosewood is native to many South American countries. Since the late 1800s, this species has experienced cycles of over harvesting, driven by the demand for the essential oil extracted from the heartwood. This pressure has been somewhat relieved by the synthetic production of linalool, a key component of the oil which is in global demand by different industries. Despite this, illegal and unsustainable wild harvesting continues. Further, over harvesting has led to a genetic diversity decline, and most saplings don't reach maturity, making it susceptible to decline from unsustainable management. It is imperative that essential oil (leaf, leaf and branch, and heartwood) be legally sourced and extracted from sustainably managed rosewood plant material in collaboration with local and Indigenous communities. #IUCN#CITES#Rosewood#AnibaRosaeodora#MedicinalAndAromaticPlants#AirmidInstitute Reference: Barstow, M. 2021.
