¿Qué tan pro libre mercado era la Inglaterra que logró la Revolución Industrial? "Chang (2009) describes the Walpole government as the first to launch a comprehensive infant industry protection programme in 1721, and De Araujo (1993) outlines the measures taken by the British government to prohibit the export of capital goods until 1843 and the emigration of skilled artisans until 1824 in order to protect its high-technology industries" La cita viene de Industrial Policy: Old and New Issues de Wim Naudé. 'Our economy simply can't produce more, based on our size', says professor of Industrial Organisation Jeroen Hinloopen. To get a sense of how much economy we fit into the Netherlands, Hinloopen calculated the added value we produce per square kilometer compared to other countries. The Netherlands is fifth in the world. Singapore is number 1, followed by Hong Kong, Luxembourg, and Israel. What struck Hinloopen was that these countries rely on industries that take up relatively little space. 'Luxembourg has a large financial sector, Singapore and Hong Kong have many business service providers, and Israel has a large knowledge-intensive high-tech sector.' The Netherlands is an odd one out because our economy, according to Hinloopen, is more mixed. The Netherlands earns a lot from services. 'But we also have heavy industry, a lot of distribution, the high-tech of chip machine manufacturer ASML, and a substantial agricultural sector. When you look at the structure of our economy, it's quite remarkable that we add so much value per square kilometer', says Hinloopen. 📣 📣 📣 Look at our New Article with Alex J. Guerrero Picoita and Joost Heijs in Eurasian Business Review. In this article, we estimate a metaregression model to capture the heterogeneity among the articles that adopt one of the most popular methodologies that analyze the relationship between innovation and employment at the firm level (Harrison, R., Jaumandreu, J., Mairesse, J., & Peters, B., 2014). The main results suggest that sales growth due to new products is homogenous and a good proxy of product innovation while "only process innovation " shows heterogeneous patterns and is explained by different characteristics. https://lnkd.in/dWNnvyyR
