The economic sentiment indicator (ESI) continued to decline in July in both the European Union (EU) and the euro area by 0.5 points to 93.6 and by 0.8 points to 94.5 respectively, according to official statistics released recently. While the ESI’s decline was milder than in the previous two months, the employment expectations indicator (EEI) fell more markedly, by 1.8 points in both areas. It was 102.4 in the EU and 103.0 in the euro area. The Indian government plans to expand the mandatory quality standard certification to include 1,500-2,000 products in the next 2-3 years, according to Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal. Currently, over 500 products are covered by mandatory certification, compared to just 106 products prior to 2014. Goyal highlighted the importance of setting and maintaining quality standards, stating that they are crucial for sustainable development. The theme of this year's World Standards Day, celebrated on October 14, is "A shared vision for a better world" with a focus on standards for sustainable development goals (SDGs). In a move set to invigorate India's textile industry, the Ministry of Textiles has granted a two-month extension for fresh applications under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Textiles. The new deadline is now October 31, 2023, in response to fervent requests from industry stakeholders. This decision follows the reopening of the PLI portal, initially set to close on August 31, 2023. The PLI scheme for Textiles, which encompasses MMF (Man-Made Fiber) Apparel, MMF Fabrics, and Technical Textile products, has garnered substantial attention from companies looking to invest in India's burgeoning textile sector. Technical textiles are utilised in a plethora of fields, although they are still relatively unrecognised and not very visible. Yet they are playing an increasingly important role in fashion, especially in the luxury sector, always keen on innovation. European consumption of technical textiles has grown from a value of €8 billion in 1995 to almost €30 billion today, although it is difficult to quantify the revenue of this highly disparate sector. Italian manufacturers, currently the leading technical textiles producers in Europe, attempted to outline the sector’s salient features in a new symposium, called ‘Textile Made in Italy 5.0’, that was held in Milan on May 18. China's Q1 2024 industrial output rose 6.1 per cent, with manufacturing up by 6.7 per cent. Notably, the high-tech manufacturing sector outpaced overall growth, reporting a 7.5 per cent increase, which is a substantial acceleration from the last quarter of 2023 by 2.6 percentage points. The momentum continued into March, with industrial output seeing a 4.5 per cent increase compared to the same month last year, according to Chinese media reports.
