A great piece by Sarah Cliffe, Daniel Friedman, Céline Monnier, and Betty Wainaina of the NYU Center on International Cooperation at the occasion of the Spring Meetings this week, with three important recommendations on conflict and violence prevention: 1) That conflict and violence must remain top of the agenda: from criminal violence, to interpersonal and gender-based violence, the Bank has a vital role to play in building the knowledge base, building evidence, looking for optimal operational responses, promoting cross-country learning and exchange of solutions to this pervasive, universal challenge. 2) The Bank has made significant progress in “staying engaged” in active conflict, despite constraints of both mandate and instruments. Supporting the most vulnerable in these situations is feasible. Strong partnerships across development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding actors make the difference. 3) Prevention continues to be a complex endeavor but the introduction of the PRA financing windows has brought about critical discussions on the link between peace and development. The evidence of what works in prevention is slowly growing and the Bank can successfully build on it. As the note rightly suggests, success is possible.

December 4 is designated by the United Nations as the International Day of Banks "in recognition of the significant potential of multilateral development banks and other international development banks in financing sustainable development and providing know-how; and also in recognition of the vital role of the banking systems in Member States in contributing to the improvement of the standard of living." The theme for this year’s International Day of Banks is “Achieve sustainable development goals and improve the global financial architecture.” This theme emphasises the importance of aligning banking practices with sustainable development goals. To commemorate this day, we will share with you in our next post, key legal and regulatory framework for the Nigerian Banking Sector. #Internationaldayofbanks #nigerianbankinglaws #AELEX #Bankingandfinance #Bankinglaws #Internationalday #UNObservances
