This magazine cover is from 2007 — In the 16 years since TIME magazine released this special edition, the narrative remains the same- we are destroying the earth and making the earth uninhabitable. What it also tells me is that we haven’t done enough. I haven’t done enough. You haven’t done enough. The latest scientific reports tell us that 6 out of 9 “planetary boundaries” have been surpassed because of human caused pollution & the destruction of the natural world… with an additional 2 more boundaries at the cusp of being surpassed. That makes 8 out of 9. Planetary boundaries are the limits of critical global systems, including climate, water & wildlife diversity. They represent the healthy boundaries in which the planet & its inhabitants can survive. We *must* stop pretending this isn’t happening. We *must* stop scrolling past this content. We *must* take action now. It is not enough to make ‘good’ choices at an individual level- Reducing water usage, recycling, making eco purchases- thanks, but it’s not enough. I recently read Patricia Lockwood's "No One is Talking About This" where she recounts a conversation imagining a reality where the ocean has a fever...for years. If a mere degree hotter can disrupt the human body, what havoc has Earth endured? It's a rudimentary analogy, but useful in contextualizing climate change for my 7 year old (and myself honestly).
