🎉📚 Exciting News! I am thrilled to share the publication of my very first article in Frontiers in Veterinary Science titled "Development and field evaluation of PCR assays based on minimum length Bm86 cDNA fragments required for Rhipicephalus and Hyalomma tick species delineation." 🦟🔬 Tick-borne diseases pose significant risks to both animals and humans, highlighting the critical importance of accurate tick species identification for effective disease control. As a first-time author, I am excited to contribute to the field with our innovative approach. In this study, we developed PCR assays based on minimum length Bm86 cDNA fragments, targeting specific sequences (398 bp for Rhipicephalus, 559 bp for Hyalomma) for precise species delineation. Through rigorous field evaluations conducted across diverse geographic regions and host animals, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our assays. This milestone marks an important step in advancing tick species identification, offering a sensitive and efficient tool for researchers and practitioners. 👏 Our talented PhD student, Maria Høgh Kroier (Aarhus University, Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences), has created a new illustration for the PIG-PARADIGM project, highlighting the impressive cohort study within the Host Pillar. 🐽 The foundation for this pillar is a comprehensive clinical and pathological characterization of #intestinal health in a cohort of 2,500 pigs with the aim to differentiate unequivocally between the phenotype of the robust pig and the non-robust pig. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences mentions us on its social media.😍 It highlights, in particular, a study by toxicologist 👩🔬 Kateřina Hoňková and a team of scientists from the Department of Toxicology and Molecular Epidemiology and other partner institutions, which focused on DNA methylation research in city police officers working in three different locations in the Czech Republic with varying sources of air pollution. Although the study is almost two years old, it is clear that its results are still relevant today and very important for further research. 👀 https://lnkd.in/eJ4tE6J4 🧬 DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that regulates gene expression, and in molecular epidemiological studies, it serves as a valuable biomarker of exposure to environmental factors and the early effects of potential health consequences. In the study, researchers identified 13,643 differentially methylated CpG sites between Prague and Ostrava officers; the changes between officers from Ostrava and České Budějovice were insignificant. When comparing Prague and Ostrava, a group of 20 CpG sites were identified that were annotated to the same gene (RPTOR), and genes that are associated with diabetes (KCNQ1), respiratory disease (PTPRN2), and brain dopaminergic system and neurodegenerative disease (NR4A2). The cluster of genes that could be affected by DNA methylation in the Ostrava officers mainly includes the neuronal functions and biological processes of cell junctions and adhesions. The study shows that differences in the type of air pollution between locations can influence changes in DNA methylation profiles throughout the human genome.👍

We are pleased to announce the publication of our latest manuscript entitled "Comparative study of the gut microbial communities collected by scraping and swabbing in a fish model: a comprehensive guide to promote non-lethal procedures for gut microbial studies" in Frontiers in Veterinary Science!   📍 This study proposes the use of swabs in non-lethal sampling procedures to collect the mucosa-adhered gut microbiota from the fish posterior gut and compares the bacterial communities collected by conventional scraping and by swabbing methods.   📍 The study concludes that swabbing can be implemented as a reliable and non-lethal method for posterior gut microbiota studies, which is of particular interest for animal welfare and the 3Rs principle, and may offer a wide range of novel applications. https://lnkd.in/d-UPi73X #IRTA AlbertoRuiz Silvia Torrecillas Elena Kashinskaya Karl Andree Mikhail Solovyev Enric Gisbert.
