The AAP recently put out a very disappointing policy on bioengineered foods. Normally they are trusted source but they went off the rails on this one. It inspired me to generate one of my infrequent blogs. https://lnkd.in/gABWZeM5

Organic and byodynamic agriculture mitigate clinate change. Traditional agriculture contributes to climate change. Which are you supporting with your purchases?
In the history books, there will be a chapter on the old days when people stupidly sprayed toxins all over the food, and were slow to realize that it was causing an epidemic of chronic disease and infertility. A slow, invisible poisoning, devastating families and bankrupting the country with healthcare spending. I talk a lot about the use of glyphosate as a harvest aid, but it isn't the only toxic pesticide commonly used in grain production. Paraquat, Diquat, 2-4,D, and more are also sprayed on our food. The EPA announced last week that they will likely approve the use of chlormequat chloride on a variety of grains. This toxin has has never been used on human or animal feed. Evidence shows that it is an endocrine disruptor, causing growth, fertility, and development issues in animal studies. It is difficult to watch. #pesticides #chronicdisease #infertility #cancer #food #organic #organicfarming #regenerativeagriculture #integrativemedicine https://lnkd.in/gGHp-8jF

📢 Transparent. Credible. Comprehensive. We’re proud to announce the launch of environmental product declarations (EPDs) from dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition and Health – providing feed and animal protein producers with info on the environmental impacts of their feed additive solutions! Today, everyone from consumers to lawmakers is looking for more transparency on sustainability in animal protein production. And the new EPD initiative is a proactive step forward in making key data more accessible to farmers and enabling more informed decision-making 💪 EPDs give our customers a detailed overview of the footprint per kilo of our products, including their: - Carbon footprint - Energy consumption - Waste generation - Emissions - Water usage - And more! Click here to read more about EPDs and find out how to access them ✨ free of charge ✨ http://spkl.io/60414iGAW #WeMakeItPossible #WeBringProgressToLife #sustainablefarming

🎉 No majority on the re-approval of #glyphosate in today's vote in the European Parliament 🎉 📢 SAFE - Safe Food Advocacy Europe is relieved by this development, and confirms its strong #opposition to glyphosate reauthorisation. 📌 The renewal proposed by the European Commission is based on an assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)) that did not consider #dietary risk assessment for #consumers, even after finding a high long-term risk to mammals in 12 out of 23 proposed uses for glyphosate. 📌 Besides, glyphosate was classified as a "probable carcinogen" for humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC in 2015, and numerous scientific studies demonstrated the contamination and negative effects on living organisms caused by this substance. 📌 The risk assessment conducted by EFSA rely on the hazard assessment carried out by the @European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Yet, EFSA recognised "data gaps are identified". When confronted with a lack of data, it is crucial to apply the #precautionary principle, prioritising the well-being of individuals and the #environment. #notoglyphosate https://lnkd.in/eVtdTNsA The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament Tilly Metz Sarah Wheaton Natasha Foote Benoît Biteau Jutta Paulus Grace O'Sullivan Bas Eickhout Marie Toussaint Martin Häusling Claude Gruffat Corporate Europe Observatory Cécile Thibert Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe

🐜 In the European Union, insects such as black soldier fly larvae and small mealworm are an alternative protein source in food and feed. These #insects grow on so-called feed substrates that may contain insecticide residues. 📒 In his dissertation '𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱', Nathan Meijer discusses the consequences of these pesticide contaminations on the production of these alternative protein sources. 🎓 Meijer will receive his PhD on October 13, 2023: https://lnkd.in/e6TuEwFy

Mycotoxin contamination in by-products represents a drawback for reliable valorisation for food and feed, hampering their application range. The prevalence of mycotoxins in some of the common by-products used in the feed industry is presented in this recent study.

Our Latest review - considering the increasing demand for safer meat products and the need to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, adoption of plant-based supplements in small ruminant farming practices can contribute to both food safety and economic sustainability. We have summarized the potential for Sweet potato tops, Radish tops and Rice bran prebiotic as (cheap, natural and safe) antimicrobial sources in the small ruminant industry. Huge regards to my mentors — Yasser M Sanad, DVM, MVSc, PhD and Obadiah Njue

Leading transformation in livestock production - environmental sustainability - animal nutrition - feed production
Fantastic experience attending ESPN symposium 2023 in Rimini, Italy last month! For the first time there was a full day focused on “Nutrition for sustainability in broiler and layer production”. Clearly, a new field for poultry nutritionists, requiring new skills to manage life cycle assessments (LCA), environmental emissions, feed & animal footprints, new regulations…Not only about calculating CO2 eq. /ton feed; sustainability demands from food value chain stakeholders (retailers & consumers) go beyond that. It's about efficient use of limited resources, water scarcity, N and P emissions, biodiversity, circularity, ecolabelling and more. As Emily Burton from Nothingham Trent University said “we need a change of mindset within poultry production” and let me add, we need it now! Are we ready? Let’s play a proactive role from animal nutrition and lead the transformation towards a sustainability poultry food chain. I’m positive the coming edition we’ll find even more research and abstracts telling us about full environmental impact, opportunities of using feed additives and new ingredients to make poultry-based food production more sustainable as a whole. Great occassion for meeting and reconnecting with poultry industry colleagues Andreas Lemme, Carlos Dapoza, Luca Iacoianni, Alfredo Mañòn Vasil Stanev, Mari Korkeaoja-Nurmo, Stéphanie Lecuelle, PhD, MARIEN VAN DEN BRINK ; Julián Enrique Melo, Anders Katholm, William Lambert, Joao Carlos Barroso, Pierpaolo Camera, Antonio Aburto Irigoyen, and many others. #sustainability #food #environmentalfootprint #feed #wemakeitpossible #sustell #animalprotein #poultry https://lnkd.in/e8QfeyyT
