TasPorts’ $240 million wharf development in the Port of Devonport has taken delivery of its first headstock, an important structural element of the new build that connects the piles with the wharf deck. This first headstock is one of 28 precast pieces varying in size between 30 and 61 tonnes, and all of which are being manufactured in Tasmania. The procurement from three different providers enables more Tasmanian businesses play a role in delivering the new home for the Spirit of Tasmania ships. With Hazell Bros Group, VEC Civil Engineering and TasSpan - Civil Contracting all manufacturing precast elements assigned specifically according to their particular capabilities and strengths, the production of precast for the project is a truly collaborative effort on the part of Tasmanian industry. The QuayLink upgrades will increase freight capacity of Bass Strait freight by 40 per cent when the upgraded Port of Devonport opens in 2027. Over the next six months TasPorts will progressively hand over the newly developed port space for TT-Line to commence its construction. #ProjectQuayLink #QuayLink #PortofDevonport #marineengineering #Tasmania #maritimeinfrastructure

Via TunnelingOnline. February 22, 2024. “The Hudson River Ground Stabilization (HRGS) Project will modify conditions in the Hudson River to allow for future construction. In the low-cover area of the Hudson River off Manhattan’s shoreline, the riverbed is made up of silt too soft to support a tunnel. The HRGS Project is an important component of the new tunnel project. It will inject a mix of soil, concrete, and water to stabilize the riverbed in 1,200 ft of the shallow area on the Manhattan side of the Hudson River. This work will ensure the Tunnel Boring Machine can excavate the new tunnel while protecting the riverbed from disruption. By injecting grout into the silt, columns of soil mixed with cement and water will stabilize the ground above the future tunnel. Temporary sheet pile cofferdams will enclose the work zone, enabling in-water ground improvement to be completed one phase at a time, beginning in the section of the river closest to Manhattan and moving westward toward the Hudson River’s navigation channel.” Tunneling and Underground Capabilities Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists - AEG International Association of Engineering and Architecture Geological Society of America Port Authority of NY & NJ (The) #undergroundconstruction #groundinvestigation #groundimprovement International Association of Civil, Agricultural & Environmental Engineering Researchers (CAEER) https://lnkd.in/efa88UTH

Whether it’s truly sustainable and well-planned or not, and regardless of how effectively it meets specific needs, it’s impressive to witness the excellence of their engineering skills in construction. Excessive construction, particularly in the context of large-scale infrastructure and property development, has been one of the contributing factors to the financial strain on local governments in China, including Guizhou. The downturn in the real estate market has made the situation worse, as the revenue from land sales has decreased significantly, affecting the financial sustainability of these projects. #EngineeringExcellence #ConstructionSkills #InfrastructureDevelopment #SustainableConstruction #EconomicStrain #RealEstateDownturn #InfrastructureSpending #FiscalChallenges #UrbanDevelopment

Fehmarnbelt tunnel one step closer to segment immersion Contractor consortium Femern Link Contractors (FLC) has started to fill three large basins with water where #tunnel segments will be floated for the #Fehmarnbelt tunnel between #Denmark and #Germany. After two years of #construction work on the basins, FLC finally turned on the large pumps that will fill the basins with water on 21 September. It is expected to take up to a week to fill the basins, which are located outside the tunnel factory at Rødbyhavn on the Danish island of Lolland. This process will be very closely monitored by FLC to ensure that no damage is done to the dikes between the basins. Measuring 500m long and 200m wide, the three basins will play a critical role in enabling the giant segments that will make up the #immersedtunnel to be taken out to sea and lowered onto the seabed. Once completed in 2029 the undersea #road and #rail tunnel between Fehmarn in Germany and Lolland will be the world’s longest immersed tube tunnel and the world’s longest combined road and #railtunnel. The €7.1bn (£6.1bn) structure is being designed and constructed by FLC – a consortium featuring VINCI, Per Aarsleff A/S, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Firmengruppe Max Bögl, CFE, Soletanche Bachy, Bam Infra, Bam International and Dredging International. The project is being overseen by Femern A/S, a specially created subsidiary of the Danish state-owned #transport management firm Sund & Bælt. The #tubetunnel will be made up of 79 standard #precast elements and 10 special precast elements produced in the three factory buildings at Rødbyhavn. These will eventually be placed in a 19km long trench in the seabed between Lolland and Fehmarn. Once a tunnel element is ready to be immersed in water, it will be pushed forward into the shallow part of the basin, and a sliding gate will be closed behind it to seal the dock on the factory side. The floor of the shallow basin is 1m above sea level but when flooded water in the basin will be 11m deep. The floor of the deep basin is 11m below sea level and when flooded it will hold water which is 22m deep. Seawater is then pumped into the deep and shallow basins so that the water in the dock matches the seawater level. After this the floating gate will open to enable tugboats to enter the dock and transport the element from the shallow basin to the deep basin and eventually out to sea. The basins are surrounded by interior dyke walls that measure around 500m long and 11m high. Commenting on the milestone, Femern A/S construction manager Anders Wede said: "With the filled basins, the tunnel factory is close to complete. The two large gates that will control the water level in the pools are well on their way, and inside the factory we have started casting the tunnel elements... https://lnkd.in/ePyJND2a

🚧Sinkhole Incident in Sydney: Halts Tunnel Construction: 10 evacuated , Workers shifted to safe location. During excavation work for a tunnel construction project in Sydney, Australia, a sinkhole occurred near a building site. **What do we #learn from such #occurance is important for the #Tunneling Community. ✅Possible reasons may include ground loss during any subsurface excavation or any other activities including sub surface drainage system without adequate filter (IF NOT UNLIKELY NATURAL) ✅One simple procedure for mitigating ground subsidence risks is correlating excavated volume to muck disposal quantity frequently ; if exceeded, close monitoring of surroundings of each CUM of earth excavated and removed becomes essential especially working in soil. ✅Drawings shall invariably integrate Robust Fail safe Protocol in construction method including OBSERVATION FORMAT, REAL TIME ALERT LEVELS and MITIGATION. ✅ Such occurrences underscore the need of automated mechanism for safety.
