Microscopic microbial magic: a new blog series

‘Doing more with less’ seems like the mantra that’s gaining the most popularity. From Marie Kondo-ing our wardrobe, to cars being more fuel efficient, and our generation’s focus on productivity, doing more with less is the new normal - and it’s the same for plants and soil.

With rising fertiliser costs, depletion of natural resources used to produce chemical fertilisers, and disruptions to our soil health in Australia, we’re facing the pressure to get the most out of our plants and our soil. So, how do we do this? How do we help our plants and soil, all without doing too much?

Enter stage left, soil microbes.

These tiny organisms are nothing short of magic. Being an essential part of the earth’s ecosystem, soil microbes play vital roles in plant growth, soil health, and nutrient cycling. You’ve very likely heard of beneficial soil microbes a fair amount, but it might be unclear exactly what these superstars really do.

We’re here to highlight the microscopic magic of the four main types of microbes - soil bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and protozoa.

Fungi

Fungi are fascinating organisms, with a diverse range of species that are all around us. But did you know that some fungi are actually beneficial for the health of your soil and plants?

Protozoa

Looking to supercharge your plants? Look no further than the wacky, wild, and wonderful world of soil protozoa!

Bacteria

How soil bacteria can improve nutrient uptake, increase disease resistance, and improve soil structure - all without being seen!

Nematodes

Sometimes nematodes get a bad wrap. But did you know that some nematodes are incredible for your plants and soil? From pest and disease control to improving overall soil health, they're an incredible and necessary part of your soil microbiome.
