Real Madrid's opponent is the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final is Club America, the Mexican giant that this year celebrated its centenary.

Here are 10 things you might not know about the club that awaits Zinedine Zidane's men:

1. A changing nickname

Until 1981, Club America was often nicknamed 'Cremas', 'Millonetas' or 'Canarios' - 'Creams', 'Millionaries' or 'Canaries' - but were then labelled the 'Aguilas del America' - the 'Eagles of America' - as a result of a marketing campaign by their owner Televisa.

2. A youth academy for Europe

The Mexico City club can be proud of its youth academy, one which has produced star players for a number of European clubs, such as Porto's Miguel Layun, Espanyol's Diego Reyes, Granada's Guillermo Ochoa and Benfica's Raul Jimenez.

3. One of the club's idols is now a mayor

Cuauhtemoc Blanco may not have enjoyed much success in Europe, but he scored 153 goals for Club America to become their second top goalscorer and a fan favourite, while he now spends his days as mayor of the city of Cuernavaca.

4. The player wanted by Manchester United who was shot in the head

Paraguayan footballer Salvador Cabanas was a star at Club America and was on the radar of European clubs such as Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, but his career came to an end when he was shot in the head after a row at a nightclub. He survived, but didn't play top level football again.

5. Plagiarism of their centenary hymn

The centenary hymn the club came up with sounded a lot like that of Sevilla's and Club America ultimately stopped using it after complaints.

6. Leo Beenhakker led the club through one of their best periods

Real Madrid went on a 34-match unbeaten run under Leo Beenhakker, one which was beaten just last week, but the Dutch coach also led Club America on one of their brightest spells in 1995, until a disagreement with the president saw him depart Mexico City.

7. The rivalry with Chivas

The club has a historic rivalry with Chivas, who congratulated them on their centenary with the hashtag #OdiameMas - or #HateMeMore.

8. Their unbeaten run

It may not be as impressive as Real Madrid's 35-match undefeated run, but Club America have gone 16 games without tasting defeat.

9. Cantinflas, the club saviour

Film star Mario Moreno - better known as Cantinflas - played a major role in helping the Mexico City club stay in the first division in its early years, with his financial support proving vital.

10. Zamorano, a Real Madrid and Club America star

Chilean Ivan Zamorano was a star for both of this week's semi-final clubs, winning the Pichichi with Real Madrid in 1995, before becoming a fan favourite at the Azteca.
