The country’s oldest operating drive-in theater will be reaching another major milestone soon.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theater in North Whitehall Township will be holding a celebration event next month for its 90th anniversary.

The theater announced in a news release that it originally opened April 15, 1934. The drive-in will be holding an anniversary event on Saturday, April 13.

A big part of the celebration will be a re-enactment of the early days of the drive-in, with period-specific vehicles vehicles. Gates open at 5 p.m.

“It’s a huge honor to be a part of such a significant milestone, not just for Shankweiler’s but for drive-ins around the world,” owner  Matthew McClanahan said in the release. “This anniversary is a celebration of the theater’s rich history, but it also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue to evolve and innovate.”

Those attending will be able to participate in photo ops and other activities, including magic from magician Mark Mysterrio and themed drinks from County Seat Spirits.

Movie titles and showtimes will be announced later. Tickets may be purchased at www.shankweilers.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the theater’s box office the night of the show.

The drive-in was purchased in late 2022 by McClanahan and Lauren McChesney, who own The Moving Picture Cinema, a mobile movie theater company.
