I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 7th Sep 2014 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Seal Howe Cairn, Oddendale, Cumbria: Having passed Kalmott Cairn Circle by the stone wall next to Oddendale, we made our way to the Bield and Cairn Circle marked on the map. All around, the limestone pavement/bedrock pushed its way above the grass; it was particularly spectacular on the right hand side of the path. My husband and I were both transfixed and amazed at the number of red Shap Granite stones in the landscape and wished we had a GPS device to map the locations of some of the stones, as there seems to be a much larger prehistoric landscape here. These red granite stones must have been transported up to the site from where they were quarried (which a quick check on the geology of the Lake District indicates just south of Shap). The modern cairn built on top of Seal Howe wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but the views over to Yorkshire to the east were spectacular. To the north-north-west, the scar of Hardendale Quarry was easily visible. From Seal Howe, we made our way over the west side of the track to where the map promised us a ‘cairn circle’. This was a treat I wasn’t expecting – the Oddendale Stone Circle.

Easily seen from Oddendale Circle, Seal Howe Cairn is sited on a limestone escarpment 320m north-north-west of Seal Howe. It includes a slightly oval mound of limestone stones and earth up to 1.4m high with maximum dimensions of 14m by 13m.

Limited investigation located the primary burial of an unburnt male on the old landsurface and, a short distance to the south, a secondary burial consisting of an urn containing the cremated remains of a woman and child. A few ox bones were also found.

Seal Howe Cairn 3
Seal Howe Cairn 3 submitted by MonumentMan : Cairn 3 (c) is the 3rd Round Cairn in a group of 3 identified on Seal Howe/Dale Moor. The area was obviously important symbolically with proximity to settlements and stone circles. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Seal Howe Iron Age/Romano British field system
Seal Howe Iron Age/Romano British field system submitted by MonumentMan : Part of the standing wall of the Iron Age/Romano British coaxial field system on Seal Howe. It forms a Bield wall (1m) comprising limestone rubble and slabs. The earthen bank (1.5m/0.5m) continues from here to form a large rectilinear enclosure to the NE of Seal Howe Round Cairn (A) and SW of Round Cairn (B) which it truncates. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Seal Howe Cairn 2
Seal Howe Cairn 2 submitted by MonumentMan : The second Bronze Age Round Cairn or Cairn 'B' (bag marks top of cairn). Two granite stones sit on the cairn which has a hollow centre from excavation or robbing. It is not as impressive as Seal Howe Cairn (A). The cairn is truncated on the west side by the Iron Age/Romano British field system which can be seen as the earthen/rubble rectilinear bank in the photo.

Seal Howe
Seal Howe submitted by MonumentMan : Seal Howe Bronze Age Round Cairn NY5953612739 being the first of three Round Cairns identified in the landscape between Seal Howe and Dale Moor, south of Oddendale. Much of the limestone rubble used to build the Round Cairn has been partly robbed to construct a pillar cairn on top of it.

Seal Howe submitted by Anne T : To the left hand side of the path leading to Seal Howe, we were amazed at the number of red granite rocks lying in the landscape. They stood out clearly from the limestone pavement bedrock.
