Just as we get to the longbarrow and other megalithic sites my phone malfunctions and packs up. Getting very fed up with this decide to give up looking for any more old stones and just continue on with the walk up to Shipley Bridge.

Update September 2019: This chambered cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entry for the Corringdon Ball Chambered Tomb, which tells us this is "an earthen long barrow with a ruined stone chamber at the south east end."

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441904 and the Devon and Dartmoor HER: MDV5750 (Chambered Cairn at Corringon Ball).

The cairn is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1013403 (Chambered cairn at Ball Gate, Corringdon Ball), which adds: "Six stones of the chamber remain; one upright is still in situ but the others have been disturbed and the capstone has been displaced. These stones are up to 2m in height and the capstone is about 3m long and 2m wide. It is associated with two round cairns in the immediate vicinity."

Corringdon Ball Longbarrow and Stone Rows/Cairns by Andy B on Sunday, 16 March 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Margaret Hannah writes: Corringdon Ball is the most intact of the long barrows on Dartmoor (all are in a ruinous state ie not able to be entered). There are two known on South Dartmoor, one near Cuckoo Ball tomb, within a mile of Corringdon, and one on private land at Sherwell, near Dartmeet).

This site is relatively easy to access, being less than 1 mile walk from Shipley Bridge car park. The walk involves a short walk on a lane, then a fairly steep and rocky climb (quarter of a mile) up to the Moor, then mostly very easy grass paths, not steep. The barrow is reached after 45 minutes leisurely walk. It is orientated from Northwest to Southeast (the southestern end was the entrance) similarly to the West Kennet long barrow - this may mean that it was made to capture the rays of the sun at the Midwinter solstice. The long barrows which have been excavated have revealed skeleton remains; however some researchers believe that they were used for shamanic initiation rituals (ie the womb and the tomb; overcoming the fear of death - so the rays of the sun entering at the darkest time of year could have been very symbolic).

The stone rows are a short distance further on, orientated Northeast to Southwest. Visting the seven-fold rows involves crossing a very small brook (East Glazebrook) set in a small valley. There are also cairns or hut circles near the barrow and the stone rows.
Dartmoor has the greatest number of stone rows in Britain, over 70 having been recorded, and one North of Ivybridge being over 2 miles in length, orientated almost precisely North to South. Their purpose is mysterious - they have hugely varying alignments.

The stone rows reached by crossing the brook are unique - so far as we know there are seven lines of stones extant here. All stones are small, some evidently having disappeared below the soil. I have to say I found the subtle energies around these stones quite exceptional. From this site (and there is evidence of hut circles or cairns nearby) one can see two large cairns on the Western horizon, in the area north of Ugborough Beacon. These would be difficult to reach as the terrain is rough and very wet indeed.

My dowsing revealed two strong lines, on masculine, one feminine, which I believe meet within the Barrow. I would be interested to know what other dowsers find here.

FAO Andy/Margaret Hannah: I have two dowsing patterns recorded on 15.9.03 whilst asking my rods to show me the processional route at Corringdon Ball Gate long barrow. I could email these to Margaret if there is a link for her Andy?

The remains of Corringdon Ball chambered tomb are marked on the map as Long Barrow, and it is situated on the saddle of land between Corringdon Ball and Brent Fore Hill, not far from the cairn at the head of the Brent Fore row. This was once one of the largest monuments on the moor, but has been badly damaged, with a track cut through its northern part, and most of the southern end destroyed. Several large stones remain at the south end, which would once have formed a very large chamber. These are now nearly all fallen and broken, with just a semblance of any chamber recognisable.
