School Violence Awareness Week

October 16th - 20th, 2023

 

Monday, October 16th

FACT: Our schools are safer because of our security team.
  • Our schools have a team of security staff that ensure safety measures are in place. We are thankful for our security team & our students & staff know that they can rely on them daily.
  • TODAY: take the time to show your appreciation to our security team for making our schools a safe place.

Tuesday, October 17th

FACT: Stress can contribute to aggressive behavior. Take time today to ACT calm. 
  • A – Acknowledge angry feelings. Notice changes in your body.
  • C – Calm down by closing your eyes and thinking of 5 things you can see, 5 things you can hear, and 5 things you can touch.
  • T – Think about how you feel and find ways to fix it. Talk to someone if you need help! 

Wednesday, October 18th

FACT: Feeling angry is a normal emotion but how we handle it can bring peace or violence.
  • Talk about ways to resolve a problem without fighting:
    • Use humor
    • Ask someone to help
    • Walk away

Thursday, October 19th

FACT: All students deserve to feel safe at school. 
  • 3 steps that our teachers take to cultivate a safe environment:
    • Build positive relationships through communication with students and parents
    • Promote class discussions and positive peer interactions
    • Create a sense of order and routine

Friday, October 20th

FACT: Kindness reduces the effects of stress.
  • One way to show kindness is to share our kind thoughts with someone else. For example, someone may need encouragement when trying something new or challenging. You could reassure someone after a setback. Simple notes expressing gratitude, or a compliment are great ways to show kindness.
  • TODAY: Take the time to write a kind note to someone. Here are a few sentence starters ideas:
