The Muppets have been entertaining audiences since the 1950s, and now, nearly 70 years later, they're back and "working without a script" on Muppets Now, a brand-new show on Disney+ debuting July 31. It's a mostly improvised talent show with lots of special guests, not to mention tons of surprises. "We've got something for everyone," Kermit the Frog says about the show. But one familiar thing audiences can expect is the return of Kermit's on-again, off-again love. "Miss Piggy and I have always had a great working relationship, and on Muppets Now it really shines through. This is the real us, in the here and now, with no filters." Miss Piggy offered more clarity on her working relationship with Kermit. "Kermit and I have cleared up a lot of things, and now we get along better than ever. You might say, we've come to an understanding," she said. Considering Kermit's popularity, he could do anything, even run for office, but Kermit is committed to Muppets Now. "I'm just happy being your everyday singing, dancing, talking amphibian."
After such an impressive Hollywood career, what makes Muppets Now different from your other projects?
KERMIT: For the first time ever, the Muppets are working without a script. Muppets Now is totally spontaneous and improvised.
MISS PIGGY: I love working this way! Now I just do whatever I feel like and let the others deal with it.
K: That's the way you always work, Piggy.
MP: True. But now I don't have to pretend to read the script.
What sort of things can we expect from the new series? Guest stars? Surprises?
K: We've got something for everyone—cooking, celebrity interviews, scientific breakthroughs, wild game shows, in-depth profiles. And wait until you see the celebrities! RuPaul! Aubrey Plaza! Seth Rogen! Danny Trejo!—all doing things you've never seen them do before.
MP: And, to top it off, the pièce de ré·sis·tance—moi!
K: A piece of resistance. That's Piggy.
MP: Thank vous!
How do the Muppets stay current with the times?
MP: That's simple. I go shopping and buy a new watch. Preferably one with diamonds.
K: I think what they mean is: How do we stay relevant and up-to-date?
MP: Oh, for that, I buy new shoes. Once you have the perfect diamond watch and shoes, everything else is easy.
K: Accessorizing. Nobody does it better.
Miss Piggy, where do things stand with you and Kermit?
MP: Kermit and I have cleared up a lot of things, and now we get along better than ever. You might say, we've come to an understanding.
K: I don't completely understand our understanding, but I will let you know as soon as I figure it out.
MP: I'll explain it to him after this.
K: That should be fun.
Kermit, what's it like to work with your on-again, off-again romantic partner in Muppets Now?
K: Miss Piggy and I have always had a great working relationship, and on Muppets Now it really shines through. This is the real us, in the here and now, with no filters.
MP: You have to see us together to believe it.
K: And even then you may not believe it.
MP: Binge watch until you do.
Miss Piggy, it's rumored that RuPaul is a guest. What do you think when people dress up as you?
MP: It comes as no surprise. After all, who doesn't want to be like moi?
K: Well, they do say "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery."
MP: BTW, RuPaul? Fabulous!
Kermit, what famous roles do you regret turning down?
K: Hulk. Being green I thought I was a shoo-in for that part, but they decided to go with someone slightly more muscular. And I think Mark Ruffalo has done a really great job...I also thought I'd get the part of Yoda, but I couldn't master the dialogue. Backward talking, harder than it looks, it is...Plus, Yoda himself was available, so naturally they went with him. Great job, too, he did.
Miss Piggy, if you had to pick any co-star to work with, who would it be and why?
MP: Many Hollywood legends have already had the pleasure of working with moi. And whenever I ask them, they all agree: it is the high point of their career. So, in order to meet the demand to share the screen with moi, I have put together a waiting list of prospective co-stars. I won't mention any full names, but I will say this: "Meryl, Tom, Julia, Brad, Dwayne, Will, Bradley, Tom, Matt and Leo, please be patient. Once we find the right project, your dream will come true!"
Kermit, you've always had a way of bringing people together. Have you ever considered running for office?
K: No. I've never wanted to run for office. Oh sure, they say Washington is a swamp, but I still don't think politics is for frogs. Chameleons? Maybe.
