About Wagner's Tannhäuser

Following his heroic performance as Siegfried in the Met’s 2019 Ring cycle, dashing Austrian tenor Andreas Schager returns as the knight Tannhäuser in Wagner’s ravishing opera of love, lust, and redemption. Soprano Elza van den Heever is the pure and virtuous princess Elisabeth, alongside mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as the tempting goddess of love, Venus. Maestro Donald Runnicles takes the podium for Otto Schenk’s classic production, which also features baritone Christian Gerhaher in his Met debut as Tannhäuser’s companion knight Wolfram and bass Georg Zeppenfeld as Landgraf Hermann.

World premiere: Court Opera, Dresden, 1845. Premiere of revised version: Opéra, Paris, 1861. History, myth, and invention come together in Tannhäuser to create a unique and powerful drama. The title character was a real 13th-century Minnesinger who inspired a legend that Wagner used as the basis for the opera. He notably added the character of Elisabeth, based on the historical Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, wife of the Landgrave of Thuringia. The opera’s score went through several revisions after the original performances, most importantly when Wagner added the Venusberg ballet for the 1861 French premiere.

Sublime score, Terrific singing, Great staging

See it if you like top-notch productions, epic music & powerful voices. Schenk's naturalistic & faithful sets are a refreshing reminder of classic MET.

Don’t see it if you don't like Wagner or long operas. This is a 4.5+ hour evening of music with plot (such as it is) moving at a snail's pace. Act III drags

Dated, Nice sets, Beautiful music, Slow, Great singing

See it if you’re a Wagner fan or just want to see a classic German grand opera well sung, played, and staged at the beautiful Metropolitan Opera House

Don’t see it if you don’t like opera or can’t sit for a 4 1/2 hour opera or need a more relevant subject (though redeeming love is the basis of this story)

Romantic, Slow, Epic, Great singing, Great staging

See it if As lyrically soaring as Wagner's music is, the melodic romanticism of Andreas Schager's Tannhauser leaves one drained; ditto van den Heever

Don’t see it if Despite the beautiful austerity of Schenk's staging, this 1977 production is getting a little threadbare yet still serves the legend well

Great singing, Epic, Great staging, 4½ hours of gorgeous music, 30 min of plot, Long, even for wagner

See it if The music is maybe the best Wagner ever did (esp. the overture for Act I). The sets are lovely, w/multimedia flawlessly incorporated.

Don’t see it if Wow is it long. And sad. And so slow it feels longer. To call it glacial is to insult glaciers. But it's among the GRANDEST of grand opera.
