Hairshirt

Members of the general public were invited to the artist's studio for private one on one visits. The only means for recording the encounter was through a request for a small lock of each visitor's hair, as a memento of the experience .

These samples were then used to sew an anatomical heart into one of the her sleeping shirts, “Hairshirt” recalls the taboo of intimacy addressed in medieval hairshirts. Worn by monks and priests to remind them of the persecution of Christ and to stave off sexual desire, these uncomfortable undergarments also served to keep the body in a hyper-sensorial state, marking both the longing for and resistance against intimacy and human closeness.
