This palm is quickly becoming a favorite of mine here on the big island.  I grew one of these for years in my Fallbrook, CA garden, but it was just never real happy.  So I'm excited to see this one looking so happy here.

Planted 11 months ago from a 5 gallon pot.  It's roots just needed to get in the dirt and get some fertilizer.  Here's the before picture of when it was planted...

Would love to see more pictures of these.  If you have them, please post!

Nice, Jason. I'm trying some H. barfodii seeds and hope to get a good response. Heterospathe is tricky/marginal here but I've had some luck with H. elata, which, I know, tends to be weedy in SE FL. Non-existent here though.

Great looking palm Jason, the white waxy indument ( or tomentum, not sure of the proper term) is so attractive. I think I've seen some mature ones at Bill's.....just killer!

Thanks Tim.  And yeah, Bill's plants are incredible.  Hopefully he sees this thread and posts a picture.  They get even more colorful once flowering and seeding as the inflorescence and seeds are purple!

This is a gorgeous palm.  I tried to grow one years ago here in Oceanside.  It lasted a couple of growing seasons, but seemed that I could never give it as much water as it wanted.  Crazy how much size yours has put on in less than a year!  Your garden is looking great Jason, happy to see you living the palm gardener's dream out in Hawaii!!!

That's a beautiful looking palm Jason. I'd be thrilled if mine ever looked anything like the one you're growing. It's pretty obvious that they want more heat & water than I can give them, as well as less UV exposure. I've had zero luck with them in anything but the mildest sun exposed areas.
