The Tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) is considered to be the world’s only exclusive freshwater delphinid. It occurs in the Amazon drainage as far inland as southern Peru, eastern Ecuador and southeastern Colombia. It is sometimes used as bait in fisheries, and the eyes and genital organs are used as aphrodisiacs. Pollution, incidental mortality in fisheries, habitat deterioration and fragmentation due to dam construction are the main threats to this Data Deficient species.
