How to Unlock the Jeweler in Diablo 4

How to Unlock Jeweler

As you venture across the Sanctuary, you’ll encounter multiple NPCs who can help you upgrade your gear and items. With Diablo 4’s itemization placing more value on crafting services than the other titles, you can talk to various crafting vendors to reforge your items as you see fit. One of these vendors is the Jeweler NPC.

Gems are a fundamental element to your character’s build, and if you want to upgrade these items or socket them into your gear, you’ll need the help of the Jeweler. The effect might not be as impactful as Legendary affixes, but they’re still crucial for min-maxing your gear and getting the most out of your accessories (rings and amulets). In this guide, I’ll show you how to unlock the Jeweler, what services you can expect, and how to upgrade your precious gems.

Requirements to Unlock the Jeweler

You can equip the gems you find scattered throughout the Sanctuary, but what if you want to unsocket them? What if you want an upgraded version of your Skull? Those features are only accessible to those who have unlocked the Jeweler NPC in towns.

To unlock the Jeweler, you’ll first need to reach level 20. Once you reach the level requirement, a new Priority Quest—Gem Crafting—will appear on the interface. You must then complete this quest at Fractured Peaks (specifically in Kyovashad), where you’ll be able to interact with other Jewelers in other big cities afterward.

Turning Useless Stones Into Valuable Gems

For a small sum and several crafting materials, you can craft a gem type that’s currently unavailable for you. Go to the Craft Gems tab after interacting with the Jeweler to see the materials and how much gold you’ll need to craft your desired gem. Once you have everything checked out, left-click the tab to craft it.

Note that you’ll get more powerful variants of these gems later on as you level up, so be sure to check back on the Jeweler once in a while to see if any new gem rarities are available for you to forge. For example, if you have three Amethysts, you can use them to create a Flawless Amethyst, which gives better buffs.

Adding Item Sockets and Unsocketing Gems

As I’ve said before, you can add the gems to your gear, but what if your equipment has no sockets? Or what if you’d like to swap your current gems on your armor? Never fear because the Jeweler can address both of those problems.

The Jeweler can add sockets to a gear that has none. If you find gear or accessories you love that have no sockets, the Jeweler can add them for you—at a cost. If you want to add a socket, you’ll need Scattered Prisms, a crafting component you can rarely get from world and dungeon events. I highly recommend completing these events wherever possible if you’d like to have a stockpile of Scattered Prisms. Most of the items in Diablo 4 can hold one gem socket, but chest armor, weapons, and pants can often have two sockets at once. The item type determines the limit to how many sockets you can install.

If you try to salvage a gear with a gem inserted by yourself, the gem socketed in will be permanently lost. It’s not a big deal if you’re using lower-tier gems, but if you’re crafting more powerful ones, you’d want to transfer them into the pieces of gear you’re currently using. Thankfully, Jewelers can uninstall the gems on items for you free of charge.

Upgrade Your Accessories Through the Jeweler

The Jeweler isn’t only good for upgrading gems or adding sockets; they can upgrade your accessories as well. Similar to how the Blacksmith NPC works, Jewelers can upgrade your rings and amulets for a small fee. You’ll need some gold and crafting materials if you want to upgrade your rings or amulets. If you plan to upgrade Rare items, you must have Veiled Crystals. Meanwhile, Legendary items require Baleful Fragments. Since the higher upgrade tiers get progressively expensive, ensure you’re only upgrading items you plan on using for a long time.

All items in Diablo 4 can be upgraded four times, increasing their item level. Your affixes can be increased in small doses, but your item level will still dictate the affix ranges.

The last sentence may sound complicated, but it simply means that upgrading your item can sometimes result in rerolling your affix values, making some upgrades look larger. It also means that upgrading can lower your item’s affix value than you currently have.
