Erect, green or gray with silky hairs. Basal leaves with long petiole, becoming shorter on stems, with 7–13 leaflets. Flower calyx with spur pointing back, blossom yellow to cream fading to blue or pink; upper petal hairy on back, patch white, cream, or none. Grows in open areas in sagebrush and in mixed forests. Var. calcaratus (pictured) has flowers usually more than 1/3 in.; grows in northeastern Oregon to California and to the east. Other varieties with variation in size and hairiness with blue-violet flowers also grow east of Cascade Mountain Range.
