Info
Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) inornata is a solitary cup coral that is typically larger than it is wide, growing up to 18 mm high and 12 mm wide.
The cup of its exoskeleton is round or slightly elliptical, the skeleton may be green or brown in colour around the edge.
The polyp is probably unicoloured (without the zig-zag pattern seen in Caryophyllia smithii), usually brown, but can also be white or red.
The carnivorous stony coral can occur in small aggregations of individuals.
Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) inornata is characteristic of rocks in sheltered, light-protected places, such as crevices, overhangs and caves
Caryophyllia inornata is very similar to Caryophyllia smithii, with which it can therefore also be easily confused.
Synonyms:
Caryophyllia inornata (Duncan, 1878)
Coenocyathus dohrni Döderlein, 1913
Coenocyathus giesbrechti Döderlein, 1913
Paracyathus inornatus Duncan, 1878
