Lottia gigantea G. B. Sowerby I, 1834

Shell length can be 100mm. Exterior surface is chocolate brown in color with white markings. Shell often rough and eroded. The interior surface is dark with a brown margin and prominent owl-shaped markings within bluish muscle scar. Side of foot is gray. The sole is orange or yellow.

Large female limpets graze on the film of algae growing on rocks and defend their territory against other owl limpets, mobile gastropods, mussels, sea anemones, barnacles and macroalgae.
