Alpheus rugimanus has been recorded from the island of St. Helena and from the Cape Verde Islands to the Gulf of Guinea.
During research on the coast of Gabon in 2016, a specimen of about 4 cm in length was discovered while turning over stones.

Only scant information is available on the snap crayfish itself, with the exception of a detailed study on the ancient origin of the snap claw of alpine crayfish:

There are no experiences about the keeping of the crayfish and no further biological information about the animal.
