Info
Xenia sansibariana May, 1899
Xenia is a genus of photosynthetic soft corals in the family Xeniidae. Depending on the species, they resemble a mushroom from which the polyps protrude in varying lengths.
The single polyp has eight pinnate tentacles, as in all genera from the subclass Octocorallia. Some Xenia species have the peculiarity to perform a permanent pulsating movement with their pinnate polyps, which is why they are called Pumping Xenia.
While the pumping Xenia - Xenia umbellata - is well known and well researched, there is very little information available about Xenia sansibariana.
Xenia sansibariana is distributed in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the central Indo-Pacific.
Synonymised names:
Xenia actuosa Verseveldt & Tursch, 1979 · unaccepted (synonym)
