Info

Pagurus beringanus (Benedict, 1892)

The Bering hermit crab's main identifying feature is its pale blue or roughly gray legs with red bands or spots on the joints and red spines. Its reddish-colored claws are densely covered with spines. The right scissors are larger than the left ones. The Bering hermit crab's shell reaches a length of 2.6 cm.

Possibility of confusion: Pagurus granosimanus has no spines or tubercles and the legs are olive green with blue spots.

Depth range: Extremely low intertidal zone to 360 m. Mainly tidal in California.

Habitat: Rocky areas, especially around large rock formations in partially protected waters.

The Bering hermit crab often uses large, heavy Nucella lamellosa shells into which it can completely retreat, Ceratostoma foliatum und Fusitriton oregonensis. Sometimes these hermits are also found in a sponge. One of its predators is the Rosylip sculpin Aschelichthys rhodorus.
