Acteon tornatilis (Linnaeus, 1758)
Acteon tornatilis is a marine gastropod in the family Acteonidae, which is colloquially known as lathe snails. Members of the family have egg-shaped or spindle-shaped shells, as well as an operculum to close the shell opening. Woodturning snails are small snails. They feed carnivorously on tube worms.
The banded snail Acteon tornatilis is only 2.5 cm long, lives on sandy soils and is said to feed on worms. It occurs from the intertidal zone down to 250m depth.
The basic color of the shells is pink or light brown with white bands. The shell is thick, shiny and transversely ribbed, with 6–7 large whorls alternately filled with broader light brown spiral bands and smaller pinkish stripes. The outer lip is white. The shell is elongated and egg-shaped with a sharp tip. The opening is narrow at the back notch but wider at the base. The columella is slightly thickened and twisted.
