Very special thanks to Jeff Goddard, USA for his permission to use his two of photos of Cryptophyton jedsmithi.
The picutres were taken at Point Loma, San Diego, California intertidial under a boulder in the low rocky intertidal zone at the type locality.
This species was described in 2013 by Gary Williams (California Academy of Sciences), based on the specimen pictured here, as Cryptophyton jedsmithi, in honor of the American trailblazer and cartographer, Jedediah Smith.
This species is similar to Cryptophyton goddardi in overall appearance and the lack of sclerites in the neck of the polyps, but has more slender polyps (about 1 mm in diameter), a thiner basal mat, and distinctly different sclerites in the common colony mass. This specimen was from Point Loma, San Diego.
Two species of the genus Cryptophyton are known, Cryptophyton goddardi Williams, 2000 and Cryptophyton jedsmithi Williams, 2013.
The two species differ in sclerite shape. Those of Cryptophyton goddardi are irregularly-shaped radiates, tuberculated rods, and shuttles , while those of Cryptophyton jedsmithi mostly resemble spiny balls or stellate bodies.
