Disillusioned at the thought of taking down another "mark," depressed, low-level hit man Barry Berkman seeks a way out. When the Midwesterner reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an actor who is bedding a mobster's wife, little does Barry know that the City of Angels may be his sanctuary. He follows his target into acting class and ends up instantly drawn to the community of eager hopefuls, especially dedicated student Sally, who becomes the object of his affection. While Barry wants to start a new life as an actor, his handler, Fuches, has other ideas, and the hit man's criminal past won't let him walk away so easily.

Barry Berkman is a war veteran who finances his living as a hitman after his service - his partner and old friend of his father, Fuches, gets the jobs. When Barry actually only travels to Los Angeles for another job, he more or less accidentally stumbles into an acting school and thereby finds his love for acting. Now it's important to somehow reconcile these two things - but that's easier said than done. I've never seen a premise as unique as "Barry" - it's truly incomparable. If I had to describe the series somehow, I would say it's a little like Dexter, only with a lot more comedy. That's another thing that makes this series so special. It combines genres that I've never seen combined before - namely serious crime and light-hearted comedy. What sounds a bit absurd at first actually works surprisingly well! I have almost nothing to complain about in the series. The actors do their roles well, the camera work isn't often special, but when it is, it's really extremely well done and the writers did a phenomenal job anyway! In my opinion, the ending could have been better, but "Barry" is still a unique series that is very refreshing in a time where many productions are only produced and written according to the same formulas.

If the first half of the season hides everything dark under the funny, then the second half hides everything funny under the dark. This crazy combination makes the show one of the standouts on television.

Season one - 6 stars. Season 4, last episode, also 6 stars. But, what a disappointment for the rest of the series - seasons 2, 3, and 4. What was once a very clever and funny dark comedy brought to life by brilliant acting, quickly turned into nothing more than an exhibitionist's delight. The transformation of Barry's character, undoubtedly due to the twisted inner world in which he lived, was "well done". However, the stark deviation from season one, took such a dark turn that Barry became nothing more than a Dexter knock-off. Whereas with Dexter, we were so heavily invested in all the characters, with Barry we sadly become immersed in an irritating, meandering story that keeps us asking - do we really care about any of them?

Directed and acted masterfully with high levels of tension and a unique approach, the first season of Barry is occasionally too stuffed and expeditious but it presents a darkly humorous edge that effectively works with the stiff drama and overarching theme of self-development and discovery.
