Badajoz is the capital of the province of Badajoz in the Autonomous Region of Extremadura and is both a university city and an episcopal see. Its history is quickly told: it was founded around 875 by the Galician Muslim Ibn Marwan and (like most of Spain and Portugal) was part of a Moorish kingdom, the Taifa of Badajoz, until the 11th century. After the reconquest from the Moors, the Spanish and Portuguese fought for centuries over the area in several wars such as the War of Spanish Succession in 1705, the Peninsular War of 1808-1811, which ended in the storming of Badajoz in 1812, and finally the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Since 1715 Badajoz is Spanish.
At sunset I looked for a vantage point on the old bridge Puente de Palmas, which is closed to cars, with a view of the old town and the Moorish fortress Alcazabar de Badajoz. This bridge is the oldest in the city and was built in 1460. In the following centuries it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and got its present form in 1833.
I was happy about the beautiful light on this warm spring evening and took pictures until blue hour.
