Characteristics of Underachieving Gifted Students

Coasting, Passive,
Complacent

Students are content to slip by with poor or mediocre


grades.

Anxious,
Perfectionist,
Stressed

Students are tense and self-conscious, have a fear of


failure, set unrealistic expectations.

Defiant, Rebellious

Students view school as useless and they defy authority


figures

Sad, Depressed

Student displays characteristics of depression, low energy,


low self-esteem, disrupted sleep and eating patterns, lack
of concentration

Identity searching,
Creative

Students are very passionate and do not want to conform.


They question existing structures and societal values.
Maybe viewed as argumentative.

Wheeler-Dealer,
Manipulative

Students have insecurities in the self-concept and take


advantage of others to get their way. These students value
their social life more than their academic lives but their
social circle is often unstable.

Social, Dramatic,
Conformist

Students are viewed as having social success, participating


in extracurricular and competitive activities where they
know they excel. Fear of being labeled a nerd. Avoid
being alienated by their peers.

Dependent, Victim

Students seek validation from authority figures o boost their


poor self-esteem. They feel sorry for themselves and are
dependent on family and teachers for reassurance.

Characteristics of Underachieving Gifted Students

Torn,
Distracted

Personal factors outside of the school environment affect these


students academic performance. External factors are viewed as
more important than academic work.

Bored

Students may avoid schoolwork, claiming it is boring.


A. The work may not be challenging.
B. They may use boredom as an excuse for fear of failure.

Struggling

Student lacks study & time management skills.

SingleSided
Achiever

Student has a focused interest in a single subject and neglect


other areas of study and talent development.

Hyperactive

Students are inconsistent in their work and behavior, impulsive


and disorganized.

Academic

Students shut down when they cannot meet their own high
expectations, drop in self-efficacy and self-esteem.

Taunted

Students are bullied and victimized, have low self-esteem, feel


helpless, useless, and rely on adult figures to protect, help, and
support them.

Sick

Students may fake an illness to avoid school or completing work,


student maybe anxious about attending school.

Bully

Students demonstrate rebellious and aggressive behaviors. They


loose their temper easily, lash out at authority figures, and have
few friends.
