Lions Release WR Stanley Berryhill in Wake of Betting Suspension

The Lions announced the release of wide receiver Stanley Berryhill on Tuesday afternoon.

Berryhill was one of Detroit’s players whom the NFL suspended last month for gambling in the team facility. Berryhill was initially given a six-game suspension, because he placed bets on non-NFL games while in the Lions facility.

Last season, Berryhill played his rookie season with the Lions after going undrafted out of Arizona. He played in four games and did not record a catch, instead primarily playing on special teams. In college, Berryhill played four seasons with the Wildcats, totaling 139 catches, 1,477 yards and nine touchdowns.

Besides Berryhill, second-year wide receiver Jameson Williams also was suspended for six games for the same reason, but the former first-round pick remains on the team. The NFL similarly suspended Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and Lions defensive back C.J. Moore each for a year, because they bet on NFL games in a team facility. Detroit released Cephus and Moore shortly afterward.
