A participial phrase is a participle and all the words that complete its meaning. A participial phrase may be placed after the noun or the pronoun it modifies or it may be used in an introductory phrase. If it is in the beginning, it must be separated by commas. If it is not important to the meaning of the sentence, it also must be separated by commas.
Examples: Jumping into the water, she caught the small boy as he was struck by the waves.
