Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QUATs) are compounds where a nitrogen atom is joined to four organic radicals and one acid radical. QUATs are commonly used as surface-active agents, disinfectants, fabric softeners, and wood preservatives. They have good penetration ability and natural detergent properties due to their strong affinity for surfaces. Certain long-chain QUATs are widely used as antimicrobials and disinfectants, forming a residual film that inhibits bacterial growth on surfaces. QUATs exist in four groups classified by their organic substituents.
