Steve's close shave raises hundreds

After being inspired by the club's Movember initiative, which saw players and staff grow moustaches to raise awareness and funds for the men's health charity, South Shields FC historian Steve Cairns took on a challenge of his own.

Steve had not been without a moustache since the year 2000, but shaved it off on the final day of October to support a cause close to his heart.

Thanks to generous donations, he raised a magnificent £319 for a South Tyneside Libraries initiative, 'Living Well With Dementia'. The group enables families living with dementia to access information, advice and support as well as opportunities for activities and socialising.

The funds add to the £1,305 raised on the club's online Movember page, which supports mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Steve said: "The 'tache is now back on, and it is staying on for another 20 years (hopefully!).

"I am both pleased and proud to announce that through the generosity of many people, we have raised a tremendous sum.

"Any further donations can still be dropped off at the 50/50 hut at 1st Cloud Arena on matchdays.

"I'd like to say a massive thanks to those who donated, including SSFC Supporters Alliance, E Crooks, P Bolam, C Copp, Derick, G Haggarth, M Miners, S Hedley, D Fall, D Lucas, Janice, Dave, Steve, B Watson, B Luther and the Cairns family."
