Unit 6 – urology and gynecology

Uro = urine  Urology – study of urinary tract  Urologist – medical specialist treating urinary system and male reproductive system  Polyuria – excess urination (signs to diabetes)  Nocturia – excessive urination at night (nocti = night)  Anuria – lack of urination  Oliguria – low amounts of urine (dehydration)  Hematuria – blood in the urine

Poly = many  Polyotia – having too many ears (usually 3)

Reno / nephron = kidney  Renitis; nephritis

Peylo = renal pelvis  Peylitis  Right under the kidney (junction to the ureter)

Ptosis = prolapse or displacement  Nephroptosis; renoptosis Uretero = tubes from each kidney into the bladder  Ureterocele  Ureteropathy

Urethro – single tube from bladder to outside of the body

Vas – vessel; duct or tube  Vasodilation – opening; enlarging diameter of a vessel  Vasoconstriction – decreasing size of a vessel  Vas deferens – part of the male reproductive system

Tripsy – crush, grind, massage Vasotripsy – crushing of a vessel Lithotripsy – crushing or grinding of a stone
