Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Butter Ball'

Bright, lemony-yellow tips on tightly congested foliage give this small, globose Hinoki a fresh, cheery look. The vivid coloring contrasts beautifully with naturally darker inner foliage. A consistently rounded habit & very slow growth distinguish this selection as superior to others. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 2’ tall by 2’ wide in size, growing 1” to 3” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Chirimen'

The fascinating foliage displays multiple textures & colors. That explains the name, ‘Chirimen’, which is a dyed crepe fabric traditionally made from silk & used for making kimonos. Each narrow, upright tree becomes a cluster of thick, upright shoots that resemble bottle-brushes, with both juvenile & adult foliage in shades of blue and green. The effect is striking and unusual for a Hinoki cultivar. Use this textural accent where the crinkly, congested foliage will stand out. Requires excellent drainage. Has a narrow upright growth habit & reaches roughly 4’ tall by 2’ wide in size, growing 3” to 5” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Confucius'

Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 12’ tall by 8’ in size, growing 6” to 10” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Dainty Doll'

The charming, slow-growing variety displays rich green foliage & a low, rounded habit when young. As it matures, the plant spreads into an intriguing, irregular form that becomes wider than tall. Lacy foliage and unique character make ‘Dainty Doll’ an excellent option for highlighting small spaces, including rock gardens & containers, where its character may flourish. Has a spreading growth habit & reaches roughly 3’ tall by 4’ in size, growing 3” to 5” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Ellie B.'

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fernspray Gold'

Classy, arching sprays of golden, fern-like foliage decorate this arresting tree. Each unique, flattened branch tapers to a point, just as a fern frond does. Give this intermediate-sized gem plenty of sun & ample moisture to achieve the brightest gold, but use caution in hot climates, where scorching afternoon sun may be too much.  Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 12’ tall by 8’ wide in size, growing 6” to 10” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Filicoides Compacta'

The delicate foliage on this stunning, upright tree looks more like fern fronds than typical Hinoki branches. Each arching, rich green branch tapers to a fine point, instead of the more usual cupped tip. Trees develop a handsome, open habit, so they stand out as focal points or combine nicely in an evergreen screen. Judicious pruning encourages a more compact shape, if desired. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 10’ tall by 7’ wide in size, growing 6” to 8” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gemstone'

Dense and dramatic it displays an unusual blend of color and texture. Its tightly layered, green fans are alive with darker and lighter shades, and plants are so dense that a single specimen can lend extraordinary character to a small space. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 2’ tall by 1.5’ wide in size, growing 1” to 3” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Goldilocks'

Displays a dense, refined & uniform stature. Its zippy, lemon yellow color is exceptionally bright, & its strong, straight central leader & sturdy trunk make it a desirable garden plant. Site this tree where there is room for a large, dramatic conifer. Has broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 20’ tall by 15’ wide in size, growing 12” to 15” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis'

An open-branched, pyramidal form with gracefully arching branchlets. Tiny, deep green needles with reddish new growth have a soft, ferny appearance and develop bronze coloring in winter. An excellent small, slender evergreen tree for screening, hedges and background plantings. Has a narrow upright growth habit & reaches roughly 8’ to 12’ tall by 4’ to 5’ wide.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Iseli Green'

This selection of the elegant Hinoki Cypress grows into a distinctive, handsome tree.  Spreading, graceful branches display gently cupped sprays of dark green, scale-like leaves, marked with characteristic white crosshatches on the underside. Attractive reddish brown bark develops striking texture with age & irregular branching gives each tree a unique personality. Full sun, but tolerates some shade. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches 15’ tall or more.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Just Dandy'

This remarkable little Hinoki is the best of the best. Compact sprays of dense, finely textured foliage decorate the branches of the low, rounded, spreading plants. Such tight foliage is usually associated with miniature selections that have extremely slow growth, but this superior cultivar grows comparatively faster. It will reach the size of a beach ball within years instead of decades. Ultimately wider than tall, 'Just Dandy' contributes unparalleled grace and beauty to small spaces throughout the year. Has a globe shaped habit & reaches roughly 1.5’ tall by 2’ wide in size, growing 1” to 3” a year.

chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Kamaeni hiba’

Tiny gold twigs have sort of a twisted pattern on a compact growing habit. Attractive & a great fit for a small landscape. Has excellent foliage & you can control the size of this shrub with pruning. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches 1’ to 6’ tall.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Kerdalo'

Intensely bright golden yellow sprays of foliage cover this sturdy & reliable plant. When young, branches spread out horizontally in a bird’s nest fashion for a ground covering mound. Excellent for use in the foreground of upright garden elements or covering a large bank. Has a spreading growth habit & reaches roughly 4’ tall by 8’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Kosteri'

This well-known selection has enjoyed popularity for decades, since its introduction about 1915. Superior form, slow growth & shapely sprays of feathery, twisting foliage that cup gracefully downward account for its reputation. Maintains a compact rounded shape for several years before eventually developing into a broad, but tidy, dense pyramid. Hints of bronze accent the tiers of soft, muted green branches, especially in winter.  Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 6’ tall by 4’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Leprechaun'

A dwarf selection of Hinoki cypress with irregular-growing sprays of rich green foliage. A perfect choice for small gardens or rockeries. Has a globe-shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 6” tall by 6” wide in size, growing around 0.5” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Mariesii'

Super fine, lacy foliage, generously accented with creamy speckles, creates a soft, frosted look that sets this cultivar apart. Versatile & adapts to both sunny & shady spots. With more sun, the accent color takes on richer, golden tones, but does not burn. With less sun, the accent is whiter & almost glows in the dark. Loosely globose when young, plants slowly become more upright & broad as they age. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 4’ tall by 3’ wide in size, growing 3” to 5” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Melody'

Lacy sprays of attractive lemon yellow foliage let this plant stand out in the garden. Narrow when young, it broadens with age. Winter brings bronze tones to the tips of the yellow foliage for a nice seasonal change. Tolerates full sun but flourishes in partial shade as well. Well-drained soil is a must. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 6’ tall by 4’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana'

This tiny Hinoki, introduced in 1867, remains a highly regarded industry standard. Superior features explain the reason: tightly cupped fans of dark green, highly congested foliage form a dense, miniature mound that contributes beautifully to small-scale plantings, including rock gardens, troughs & container gardens. Reliable year-round performance & very slow growth. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 2’ tall by 2’ wide in size, growing 1” to 3” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis'

The most popular & well-known dwarf Hinoki Cypress. Has an irregularly globose form that develops an upright habit with age. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 8’ tall by 6’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Sunny Swirl'

Bold texture & colorful foliage distinguish this narrow, upright, golden selection. Stiff, contorted branches with mahogany red bark contrast dramatically with the twisting, threadlike foliage, which displays shades that vary from yellow to gold & even chartreuse toward the interior. Unusual cockscombs occasionally develop at the tips & add to the striking texture. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 8’ tall by 6’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Templehof'

Lush evergreen foliage in broad overlapping whorls covers this carefree dwarf conifer. New foliage emerges yellow-green, matures to deep green, then takes on a bronze coloration in the winter. Excellent for use as a low informal hedge and requires little to no pruning. Has a narrow upright growth habit & slowly reaches roughly 8’ tall by 4’ wide in size.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Well's Special'

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Cumulus'

Tufts of needle-like, juvenile foliage give this rounded, light-blue selection its airy character, even when mature. Named for a look like puffy clouds, this delicate choice adds a reliable element of soft texture to tight garden spaces. Stays small without pruning; its foliage is most dense when grown in full sun. Particularly useful for container, trough or rock gardens & other small sites. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 1.5’ tall by 1.5’ wide in size, growing 1” to 3” a year.

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Curly Tops'

The distinctive curly tips & silvery blue foliage of this selection add both texture & color to the landscape. The uniquely twisted needles show off a gleaming silver side & the dense, compact form works well wherever needed. Use it to line the drive or define a garden wall in a moist, well-drained site. Partial shade produces a richer blue. Has a broad upright growth habit & reaches roughly 10’ tall by 8’ wide in size, growing 6” to 8” a year.

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Golden Mop'

The finely textured, sunny foliage of this winning "threadbranch" cypress develops vibrant new spring growth that retains its brilliance & shines in the garden all year. Well-behaved, compact & hardy, the low, mounding conifer makes a versatile addition to border, bank or foundation. It produces best color in full sun and performs even in areas challenged by heat and humidity. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 8’ tall by 8’ wide in size, growing 3” to 6” a year.

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Golden Pin Cushion'

For a handsome bit of color in the rock garden or other small space, this dense, golden cypress delivers. Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Tsukumo'

Ideal for the smallest site, it is a rounded bun that almost doubles as a mossy green rock. It has dense, finely textured green foliage & grows so slowly that it won’t outsize a trough or rock garden. The compact cushion, which is hardy, tough & resilient, is wider than it is tall. Occasionally, short feathery plumes will sprout out among the fine foliage, adding character & dimension, or may simply be removed to maintain the most compact, tiny mound. Has a globe shaped growth habit & reaches roughly 1.5’ tall by 1.5’ wide, growing 1” to 3” a year.
