Description

This board game allows students to practice using context clues to choose the correct definitions for contranyms, words that have completely opposite definitions. As if having multiple-meaning words and homophones/homonyms wasn’t enough, now we have words with contradictory definitions! The only way to know what the word means for sure is to look at the context and use the clues. In this game, students will read a sentence and use the context clues to choose the correct definition of the word.

Materials Needed & Not Included:

1. Dice– one die per group of students

2. Player Pieces– one per player; popular options in my class include plastic counter circles, mini erasers, and milk jug lids.

Preparation:

Print the game board and cards. You will need one set for each group of students. I highly recommend laminating them for durability (cold lamination is great because it is thicker and doesn’t peel when cut through). I also recommend printing each set on a different color cardstock so that when you find a lost card on the floor at the end of the day, you know which set it belongs to.

Directions for Play:

1. Pass out a game set (1 board & card set, 1 number cube, enough place markers for all students in the group) to each group of students.

2. The first person takes a card and reads the sentence. He/she decides which definition is the correct one for the underlined word and states his/her choice. Another student checks the answer using the answer card.

3. If correct, the student rolls the die and moves his/her piece. If not correct, the student remains on the same square.

4. The first player to reach finish is the winner.

Alternative:

You can also use the question cards as task cards. A recording sheet is included.
