We focused on seven grassland bird species: sedge wren (Cistothorus paltensis), Savannah sparrow (Passerculus sandzmchensis), grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), Henslow's sparrow (Ammodramus hensloxmi), dickcissel (Spiza americana), bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), and western meadowlark (
Sturnella neglecta).
Researchers found that grazed plots had more native plants than ungrazed ones and that all three bird species studied -- Western meadowlark (
Sturnella neglecta), Horned lark (Eremophila alpestris), and Grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), had positive associations with native plant abundance.
RESULTS--We found 221 nests of eight species of birds over two field seasons (Table 1), with Cassin's sparrows, grasshopper sparrows, lark sparrows, and western meadowlarks (
Sturnella neglecta) accounting for 84% of all nests monitored.
The most commonly detected species was the western meadowlark
Sturnella neglecta (n = 56 detections), while the Emberizidae (sparrows) family was the most commonly detected family (n = 106).

Forest dwelling birds such as Townsend's solitaire (Myadestes townsendi) and mountain chickadee (Parus gambeli) are replacing grassland obligate species such as sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and western meadowlark (
Sturnella neglecta) in larger stands.
Baird's Sparrows (Ammodramus bairdii), Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum), Le Conte's Sparrows (Ammodramus leconteii), Sprague's Pipits (Anthus spragueii), Western Meadowlarks (
Sturnella neglecta), and Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) were absent from unburned areas.
An incubation stage of 14 d and nestling stage of 11 d were chosen for simulation because these are average values for the Western Meadowlark (
Sturnella neglecta) (Baicich and Harrison 1997), and it was data collected for this species (by B.W.
